PVC Archery[edit]

PVC Archery is a branch of Archery, in which the bows are made of PVC Piping.

Origins[edit]

A PVC bow and a LARP arrow, on grass.

While the origins of this community are not known, it has gained traction across the world. In 2009, former international archer Diego Torres had suffered an injury and decided to make a light bow made of plastic pipes he’d once seen, Diego decided to create his own PVC bow to improve his rehabilitation. By Autumn 2015, Diego’s PVC bow design was being used in more than 10 regions of Colombia and different cities in Paraguay, Guyana and Bolivia.[1]

Advantages[edit]

The advantage of using PVC as a material in making bows is mainly cost[2], the material cost of one bow approximately is anywhere from $30 to $7 USD, additionally the material is versatile and can be formed into most traditional bow styles[2]. Due to PVC's versatility, take-down bows and more modern, recurve takedown bows have been created e.g. Diego's bow.[1]

Manufacturing[edit]

To date, the bows are typically made by heat-forming the PVC pipe into the shape of a traditional reflex bow and author/creator Nicholas Tomihama has gone over in detail about the creation of such bows.[3] The Components of a PVC Bow aren't very complicated, the entire body of the bow; consisting of a handle, lower and upper limb and nocks with the help of cutting and heating, can be made out of a single pipe piece, in addition a length of rope/string is used to string the body, which completes a PVC working bow.
