PWND is a free-to-play first person shooter game developed and published by Skydance Interactive, released on July 20, 2017 through Early Access and fully released on April 6, 2018. The game is set in a not-so-distant future where PWN-ing is key to success.[1] It is also the only game from Skydance Interactive that is not a VR game like Archangel and The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners. In 2022, the game was shut down.
Gameplay
Akin to Fortnite, Team Fortress 2 and Quake Champions, 3 to 3 players fight in an FPS arena with heroes of their choosing.[2] During the game, players must “pwn” others by performing a close-range victory dance on their downed opponent before they respawn, as part of the game’s dynamic point-capture system to score points. When a player is killed, they are not completely dead. They can be revived by teammates, crawl to a health pack, or be Pwnd by the attacking team. Pwning involves standing over the player and activating the Pwn key. When a Pwn is activated, an animation plays of you dancing over the fallen foe and there is a countdown for the Pwn to complete, which makes you a sitting duck to the rest of the enemy team.[3][4] There are over 20 Single-player Challenge Mode levels to hone and tone your PWN skillz.
Characters
There are over 5 heroes to select from:
- Hank “The Humiliator” Harris: An aggressive bruiser with a vicious frontal assault and an unparalleled rocket jumping technique.
- Risa “The Pwnisher” Ito: A fierce challenger equipped with a mech-suit engineered for speed and precision PWNing. She calls on an army of assistant PWN-bots – small robots programmed to pwn the nearest downed enemy on her behalf.
- Mack “The Law” Lawson: A formidable former security guard and commando with his Regulator, a shoulder mounted rocket launcher that fires three round bursts. Mack is a walking fortress who fires a projectile that spawns a Lockdown Shield, blocking enemies and enemy fire.
- Victor “SPLICE” Guerrero: A high-mobility mutant whose preferred strategy is to slow opponents down with his Time Wave, a special weapon which creates a disruption in the space-time continuum, causing enemies to move in slow motion. Once enemies are rendered helpless, Splice finishes them off at close range with his Scattershot – a shotgun that fires multiple exploding goo pellets.
- Vex: A cyber ninja who relies on speed, melee attacks and a tenuous grasp on reality to take down her opponents. She’ll use her a grapple hook before striking a deadly blow with her sword dubbed Cyber Saber.
Development
On July 20, 2017, Skydance Interactive released a new original FPS game called PWND after being in Early Access for 7 days. By April 2018, it became free to play, but by 2022, the game was shut down for unknown reasons.[1]
Reception
The game received mostly positive reviews for its visuals and gameplay.[5] A review from Opium Pulses gave it a 9 out of 10 for the visuals but lacked story.[6]
