In 1994, a large number of records by Canadian bands were not available on CD for a variety of reasons. A small market, titles originally released on (now defunct) independent labels, and a general indifference by at some major labels at the time..[1]

With the goal trying to correct this situation, Pacemaker Entertainment was started by a couple of music fans and an industry veteran.

History[edit]

Moxy- Self Destruction (Greatest Hits), launched Pacemaker. There three versions of this CD. One with black and white graphics and a plain red disc (due to production delays and a hard release date) that was only available on release day in San Antonio, a standard one with the "EX" suffix, and a Canadian one (with one added track, "Take It Or Leave It"- a semi hit in their home county that the label somehow neglected to include.) Based on the success of this release, the following year they released the first three Moxy albums individually. Those releases went much smoother.

With limited access to albums from the majors, Pacemaker looked towards a number of independent labels for titles.

Frank Davies Daffodil Records catalogue was mined for a couple of compilations. One from Fludd that also included tracks from their Warner and Attic albums. Another from Toronto band The Hunt who, like Moxy, had a following in San Antonio thanks to local DJ Joe Anthony[2]

Pacemaker then turned to Mort Ross'[3] Revolver label for Leigh Ashford- Kinfolk, Buzz Shearman's pre Moxy band, Chimo! with Breen_LeBoeuf(April Wine, Offenbach_(band), Celine Dion, Motherlode) , and a 2 on 1 from Motherlode.

Colaboration with Polyram's Russell Prouse and musical archivist Bill Munson, resulted in a Greatest Hits CD[4] from Ottawa's Five_Man_Electrical_Band entitled "Absolutely Right"[5].

Subsequent titles came from Jack Boswell's[6] Paragon label (McKenna Mendelson Mainline - Blues, Christmas, Plastic Clound and Folklords, A Passing Fancy) and Don Grashey's Gaiety (Souls of Inspryation, Jarvis Street Revue, 49th Parallel, plus two volumes of 45 only tracks). When Boswell and Grashey decided to retire from the music business, Pacemaker purchased these previously licensed recordings.

In 1996 they started a program to release titles from Wolfgang Spegg's Bomb Records catalogue with Bob Segarini "Gotta Have Pop", but ultimately transferred the licenses to Jaimie Vernon's Bullseye Records. Similarly, two Goddo albums originally on Fatcat Records were also transferred to Bullseye.

Around 2005, Pacemaker began to partner with Chicago's Lion Productions[7] on both a number of new releases plus reissues of older titles with expanded booklets and enhanced audio and artwork. The LN suffix on a catalogue number indicates a co-production. Some LPs use a Lion catalogue number.

2008 brought the first major label reissues! While at Polygram, Russell Prouse had put together a best of from The_Paupers, but it had been out of print for a few years, so Pacemaker released both their individual albums. Universal Music, who owned Polygram, subsequently licensed a number of other albums to the label. Warner also let Pacemaker have several titles including Kensington Market, Whiskey Howl and Mandala

In 2010 the label started working with Ottawa's Mousehole[8] Music, reissuing a number of bands from that city. This included The Staccatos/Five Man Electrical Band, The Townsmen, David Wiffen and The Esquires.

Lion and Pacemaker are currently releasing some LP releases in conjunction the Montreal label "Return To Analog" that see RTA putting out black vinyl, and Lion and Pacemaker doing short runs (100-300) on coloured vinyl.

Coming full circle, Pacemaker, in conjunction with Frank Davies will be releasing the unreleased second album by the Pukka Orchestra and a collection of recordings from their vocalist Graeme Williamson in late 2023.

Pacemaker launched Instant Replay Music in 2023 as an imprint to focus on new releases, while Pacemaker handles reissues. First title on Instant Replay was Sherri Harding - A Million Pieces[9]
