Plot[edit]

The sun burns the nape of young Adam Loera who, accompanied by his older brother Carlos, is engaged in the perilous journey across the desert on the Mexican-American border. The brothers were abandoned by their guide, who was to help them get to Long Beach where their mother awaits. The brothers risk it all.  When the desert is on the brink of swallowing them alive, a telephone booth appears like a mirage. Pacific Bell is the fable of two migrant children left to fend for themselves; a story told from the imaginative perspective of the youngest Adam, for whom the desert resembles the bottom of the ocean, and the phone ringing is a mermaid’s song.

Inspiration[edit]

Every year, migrant children disappear in the sands of the desert or at the bottom of the sea. They are part of this tidal wave of hundreds of millions of migrants around the world who are fleeing war, hunger and precariousness. Often, the bodies of those who perish are not found and these children disappear as if they had never existed.

Pacific Bell is both the title of this short film and the title of Julie Hétu's novel (2018). The themes of Mexican illegal migrants, the mythical Mojave phone booth of the Mojave Desert and the tale of Andersen's The Little Mermaid (as a dreamlike universe) were chosen to co-write a new story adapted to the short film format. The desired effect could be summarized as follows: to plunge the spectator into a desert where two children drown.
