Pacific Century Fellows
The Pacific Century Fellows program is patterned after the White House Fellows and was founded in 1997 by Harvard University graduate Mufi Hannemann, who was two-time Mayor of Honolulu (2004 and 2008) and earlier served as a White House Fellow under Vice-President George H. W. Bush in 1983-1984. He also worked in the administrations of Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton.[1][2] By creating opportunities for lasting relationships, the program "encourages creative thinking when searching for solutions to state problems" aimed at giving back to Hawaii.[3]
Description[edit]
The competitive process selects leaders from Hawaii who range from their late 20's to early 40's that have shown promise by establishing themselves early in their careers as potential influencers in the "Aloha" state and throughout the Pacific.[4][5] The nine-month program provides exposure and interaction with industry leaders including education, military, agriculture, energy, homelessness and affordable housing, criminal justice, tourism, and government.[6] Notable alumni include U.S. Senator Brian Schatz, Governor of Hawaii David Ige, former U.S. Representative Mark Takai, former Mayor of Hawaii (island) Billy Kenoi, and Dean of the College of Social Sciences at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Denise Konan.[7]
