Paco Charlin

Paco Charlín is a bassist/composer born in Vilanova de Arousa, Galicia, December 19th, 1975. At eight years old, he started to study solfege and electric bass lessons with private teachers from his native region, where he later enrolled at Estudio Escola de Música (Santiago de Compostela), Escola Taller (Pontevedra) and Escuela Baio Ensemble (Vigo). In 1995 and 1996, he received a scholarship by Estudio Escola de Música to participate in the “Sixth and Seventh IASJ Jazz Meeting” in Tel-Aviv (Israel) and Copenhagen (Denmark), directed by the International Association of Schools of Jazz (IASJ).

In 1996, he received two scholarships to attend the Berklee College of Music (Boston, Massachusetts) where he graduated with a dual major in the year 2000, Bachelor of Music Degree in Jazz Composition and Bass Performance (Magna Cum Laude) and The Charles Mingus Award of Outstanding Musicianship. He also studied at Roxbury Community College.

Following his graduation, the martist has established himself as an active performance, composer and educator, serving as faculty at the Seminario Permanente de Jazz de Pontevedra (SPJ) for seventeen consecutive years, as well as giving master-classes and clinics at various workshops and Jazz Schools in Spain. He went on starting to develop composing ideas and exploring particular projects to release his own contemporary creative albums as a bandleader and to emerge and to grow his own singular voice, followed to expose the music under his label Free Code Jazz Records.
