Patrick Pimblett (born 3 March 1995) is an English mixed martial artist and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt who currently competes in the lightweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).[2][3] A professional since 2012, Pimblett is the former Cage Warriors Featherweight champion.[4]
Background
Influenced by watching Vitor Belfort's knockout over Rich Franklin at UFC 103, Pimblett started training in mixed martial arts at the age of 15, joining Next Generation MMA one week later and deciding he would compete in the sport for a living shortly after.[5] Pimblett was born 3 March 1995 in the Huyton area of Liverpool, England. In 2009, Pimblett was influenced by the Vitor Belfort-Rich Franklin fight at UFC 103. It was this fight that encouraged Pimblett to join Next Generation MMA a week later, deciding he would seek a career as a mixed martial artist.[6]
Mixed martial arts career
Early career
Pimblett made his debut in 2012, aged 17, racking up a 3–0 record before signing with Cage Warriors a year later.[7] In 2016, he claimed the Cage Warriors featherweight championship and defended it once before losing it and moving up to lightweight.[8] After a win, he challenged for the Cage Warriors lightweight championship, losing by unanimous decision.[9] After two more wins in the organization, Pimblett signed a contract with the Ultimate Fighting Championship.[10][11]
Pimblett made his professional debut in 2012, winning his first three fights before joining Cage Warriors a year later, upon turning 18.[12] In 2016, he won the Cage Warriors featherweight championship. He defended it once, beating Johnny Frachey at the Echo Arena in Liverpool.[13] Upon losing the title at the second defence, Pimblett moved up to the lightweight division.
After his first win in the weight category, he unsuccessfully challenged for the Cage Warriors lightweight championship.[14][15] Pimblett went on to win his next two bouts for Cage Warriors, before signing a contract with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).[16][17] Pimblett had previosuly declined two UFC deals, getting better financial offers from Cage Warriors.[18]
Ultimate Fighting Championship
Pimblett made his promotional debut against Luigi Vendramini on 4 September 2021, at UFC Fight Night 191.[19] After absorbing various hard shots and showing a durable chin, Pimblett won the bout via knockout in the first round. This fight earned him the Performance of the night bonus.[20]
Pimblett faced Rodrigo Vargas on March 19, 2022 at UFC Fight Night 204.[21] He won the fight via rear-naked choke in round one.[22] With this win, he received the Performance of the Night award.[23] Paddy would later reveal he made $12,000 to show and $12,000 to win.[24]
