Padel Pingpong was invented in Sweden in 2020. As the name indicates Padel Pingpong is a racket sport that combines influences from table tennis and padel tennis.[1] It all started during an after work where Magnus Willner and Erik Magnarsson played table tennis in a conference room and the walls came into use.[2] A company named Padel Pingpong International AB was later founded to develop the concept. Cofounders are Johan Edfors, professional golfer and Jörgen Persson professional table tennis player, amongst a couple of others.

The Court and equipment

The court is made up by a rectangular box, made of security glass measuring 3.208 by 6.100 m and 2.075 m high. The short sides have a 17 degree angle to make the ball bounce back easier. In the middle of the court is a table (measuring 1.45 by 2.44 meters) . The table has rounded corners designed to easier move around inside the court and to avoid injuries.[3]

The ball is 55 mm in diameter (compared to a table tennis ball that is normally 40 mm in diameter) and the rackets are made of wood or plastic without friction (meaning no spin). The net measures 21 cm in hight.[4]

Rules

The game has influences from other racket sports when it comes to the rules like using the walls as in padel tennis. Also the counting, first to 11 points in each set wins, like in table tennis. But it also has it's own rules ie. the possibillity to gain bonus points within a rally and not being allowed to smash the ball out of the cage.[5]

International expansion

Padel Pingpong has received millions of views across social media platforms, including Tiktok and Instagram.[6] [7]

The sport has also been promoted through international events such as Waldner cup in Oslo and The 2023 European Table Tennis Championship in Malmö.[8] [9]

By 2026 the sport is available in 16 countries.[10]

Media

United States

The recording of the Padel Pingpong Championship has been broadcasted on several occasions on ESPN networks, including ESPN2 and ESPN8.[11] [12] [13][14]

Sweden

Hallandsposten wrote an article in 2022 when the first prototypes got in place and the sport was launched. Jörgen Persson and Johan Edfors, both from the region Halland, was interviewed and it was mentioned in the text that the idea of the concept came from an afterwork where Magnus Willner and Erik Magnarsson played table tennis using the walls.[15]

Italy

The concept was shown on a large and popular Italian show named Tú Sí Que Vales in 2024, giving a larger audience a glance of the sport.[16]
