Pain Generator is the solo Industrial and Harsh noise project of John Cross.
History
Pain Generator was created in 2006, originally under the name "Grain Shifter" and released a compilation album with prolific Japanese cyberpunk author, Kenji Siratori. The first official album 'Disgusted With Myself' was released in December 2014, after which the project played a number of live guerilla-style shows before finally performing at its first real venue as "Pain Generator" in 2018 at Fallout in Richmond, Virginia. After a nearly four-year break from live performances, Pain Generator returned in 2022 to open for Dawn of Ashes, again at Fallout.
Harsh Noise Phase
While some tracks could be categorized as dark ambient or drone, the vast majority of early Pain Generator would be considered Harsh noise or Power Electronics.
Power Noise Phase
The album "this is not for you" featured the first song with a focused use of rhythm and drums in 'A face in a cloud, no trace in the crowd' while the album "YOUR PAIN IS MY PLEASURE" showed more signs of hard-hitting drums and a shift towards a Power Noise style.
