Painbreak is an independent power groove heavy metal band formed in Jonesboro, Arkansas in the fall of 2002. Originally founded by guitarist James Tate and drummer Jim Davis, the band built a presence in the regional underground scene by combining aggressive groove metal with heavy thrash elements. Painbreak's sound was characterized as "power groove metal," blending 1980s and 1990s thrash guitar work with aggressive palm-muted riffs, explosive live arrangements, and intense lead vocals. Regional music listings categorized their sound as a mixture of classic heavy metal and modern groove metal. The band had heavy influences from bands like Pantera, Slayer, Black Sabbath, Metallica, Black Label Society, and Prong.
The lineup consists of; James Tate: Lead guitarist (founder), Jim Davis (Drummer) (co-founder), Jason Sanders (Bassist), Jeremy Turner (Guitarist), Brad Warner (Drummer), and Corby Spicer (Vocals).
Vocalist Corby Spicer joined the group in October 2003, followed shortly by bassist Jason Sanders. The lineup later expanded to include second guitarist Jeremy Turner and replacement drummer Brad Warner.
Painbreak built an international online following primarily through mid-2000s independent music platforms like SoundClick and MySpace, accumulating over 38,000 stream plays. Their hit single, "Piece x Piece," Written by Tate, Davis, and Spicer; peaked at #5 on the SoundClick Heavy Metal subgenre chart and #8 on the overall Metal chart. "A SHELL OF MYSELF" peaked at #7 on the Heavy Metal chart and #14 on the main Metal chart. The son of lead guitarist James Tate created a YouTube channel compiling all the songs and demos from early Painbreak.
