History
Founded in 1985, Grupo Palace opened the doors of its first property, Cancun Beach Club, in Cancun, Mexico. Today, the 205-room hotel is known as Beach Palace. Another resort, Beach Club Palace, soon opened its doors, becoming the second hotel project of the Group.
Wasting no time, construction soon began on a third resort, the 560-room Cancun Palace, though it didn’t open its doors to the public until 1988. At that time, the resorts were designed with a European plan.
Construction of Sun Palace Cancun Puerta al Sol began in 1989. It was the first property to feature an all-inclusive plan. It finally opened its doors as a 93-room resort in 1992.
A bigger change was in the works. After working with a New York consulting and brand-building firm, the name of the company officially changed to Palace Resorts.
In September 1996, the 731-room Moon Palace Nizuc saw the light of day. Then in June 1999, the 1,296-room Moon Palace Sunrise opened its doors, becoming the largest complex in the chain, not only in terms of guest rooms, but also due to the Moon Palace Arena Convention Center, which opened on May 6 during the Tianguis Turistico 2014. Thanks to an investment of 22 million dollars and more than 13,000 m2 of space, it became the best option for events and conventions in the region.
2001 to 2017 saw several additions to the Palace Resorts brand: The 1,266-room Aventura Spa Palace; the 464-room Pooja Palace (the first eco-resort of the franchise); and Moon Palace The Grand-Cancun (MPTG) on May 17, 2017. MPTG had been in operation as part of Moon Palace Cancun since 2005. Lobby Moon Grand (as it was known then) only had three buildings and 300 rooms. A visionary renovation by the hotel group gave life to Moon Palace The Grand between 2015-2016.
In 2004, Cozumel Palace, Playacar Palace, Vallarta, and Le Blanc projects resumed their development.
In June 2005, the 700-room Moon Palace Jamaica Grande opened its doors, becoming one of the brand’s first properties outside of Mexico and the Caribbean.
In 2007, Isla Mujeres Palace opened its doors in Quintana Roo, just off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. With 62 luxury suites, it was the first resort designed with a five-star, all-inclusive model. On March 31, 2022, Palace Resorts finalized the sale of this property to the renowned Spanish group SHA WELLNESS.
Between 2009-2010, a new concept for a luxury, all-inclusive resort in the Dominican Republic began to take shape. The island resort will officially make its debut as the 2,250-room Moon Palace The Grand - Punta Cana in 2024.
Finally, on February 1, 2018, the 374-room Le Blanc Spa Resort Los Cabos opened its doors, featuring all-inclusive, adults-only luxury service.
Palace Resorts has been a pioneer in the all-inclusive hotel concept since 1990, with 9 resorts in 2 countries and 4 different locations in Mexico and the Caribbean. At the same time, the brand continues to be a devoted contributor to the development of society as a socially responsible company. It has done so with multiple approaches to the common good, such as the Palace Foundation, a project with various social approaches, including:
- Health
- Education
- Welfare
- Environmental Care
- Dreams
- Home
- Refettorio by Chef Massimo Bottura

New Resorts
Palace Resorts continues to bet on the path of all-inclusive luxury comfort, with continuous growth. In 2019, the flagship brand announced its expansion outside the Mexican Caribbean, with a new resort in the Dominican Republic, which will join the family along with its big brother, Moon Palace Jamaica. Moon Palace the Grand - Punta Cana (Scheduled to open in 2024).
Golf Course
The Palace Group boasts a 27-hole Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course [3] (Dunes, Jungle, and Lakes) on the grounds of Moon Palace Cancun. The lush flora and fauna surrounding the Moon Palace Golf & Spa Club make it one of the most stunning in the Mexican Caribbean. Guests can also enjoy other unique amenities, including the services of their Awe Spa.
Weddings
Naturally, an industry giant such as Palace Resorts bet that the unique splendor of its luxury resorts on the dazzling Caribbean Sea would make the perfect setting for weddings. Thus, the company extended its offerings, with the addition of a Wedding segment in 2000. Moon Palace Nizuc (now part of Moon Palace Cancun) was the first resort to promote a new concept of all-inclusive destination weddings in Mexico and the Caribbean.
