Palace of Gathering Elegance (Chinese: 储秀宫, pinyin: Chǔ xiù gōng), formerly known as Palace Shouchang (Chinese: 寿昌宫) is one of the Six Western Palaces in the Forbidden City. It was a residence of imperial concubines during Ming and Qing dynasty.[1]

In the Palace of Gathering Elegance, Empress Dowager Longyu, wife of Guangxu Emperor and Cixi's niece signed the proclamation of abdication.[2]

History[edit]

Palace of Gathering Elegance was built in 1420 by Yongle Emperor as a part of Inner Court's western palaces and named "Palace of Shouchang" (寿昌宫). In 1535, the Jiajing Emperor renamed the palace as "Palace of Gathering Elegance" .[3]

During Ming dynasty, Chuxiu Palace was the official residence of the Crown Prince.[4]

In 1884, in order to celebrate the fiftieth birthday of the Empress Dowager Cixi, 630.000 taels of silver were spent on a large-scale renovation of Palace of Gathering Elegance. The existing buildings are in the shape of those rebuilt in 1884.[5][3]
