Danton Palinda Wickramasinghe (Sinhalese: ඩැන්ටන් පාලින්ද වික්රමසිංහ; Tamil: டென்டன் பாலிந்த விக்ரமசிங்க) is a Coordinating Secretary (Vanni District) to Minister of Youth & Sports[1] [2], Minister of Development Co-ordination and Monitoring and State Minister of Digital Technology and Enterprise Development, Hon. Namal Rajapaksa.[3] [4] [5] He's an ardent supporter of former President His Excellency Mahinda Rajapaksa, He's one of the District Coordinators of Sri Lanka Podujana Youth Front (SLPYF) in Vanni District and also he contested for the Colombo Municipal Council at the Local Government Election - 2018.
Early life
Palinda was born in August 1984 at McCarthy Hospital, Colombo-07, Sri Lanka. He's a past pupil of Royal College, Colombo 7 since 1990 to 2004. He sat for G.C.E. Advance Level in 2003 from Commerce Stream. Joined Cub-Scouting in 1993 and Received the Gold Star in 1995 (the highest rank awarded in Cub-Scouting). He was also a member in college 'Junior Hewisi Band' Since 1993 and played the instrument 'Thammattama'.
He was awarded College Colors twice for Soccer and Rugby-Football. He represented college U-19 team for the Bradby Shield in 2003.[6][7] He became 'Champion Athlete' several times in College Inter-House Sports Meet (age categories U-11, U-13 and U-17). Representing Royal College in Soccer, Rugby and Athletics gave him the first extensive experience of working as a team with people of different communities, races and ages. Palinda was also a member of the 'Royal College Cadet Band' and College Scout Group. He was a College Inter-House level Boxer and also served as a Junior Prefect' in year 5 and 8 and as a 'Senior Prefect' in 2003-2004 in Royal College.
Social Work
A businessman by profession, Palinda Wickramasinghe has been active in social work and activities of Royal College Old Boys Union and became an Elected Member of the 'RCU Union' for the third consecutive year[8] in 2019. He was at the forefront in a project named "I gave back to Royal College phase I - V"[9] by the Group of 2003 of Royal College, Colombo 07[10][11]. This project saw the need of upgrading of several school labs (Inclusive of two chemistry labs and construction of an IT lab) during last four years[12][13], spending Rs.17.5 million[14]. He was also a part of the team which launched 'The Privilege Card of Royal College' in 2013.[15] launched privilege card. He was also the Ex President of Weightlifting and Bodybuilding Advisory Committee of Royal College[16] and the Ex President of the Group of 2003[17] - Royal College Union, Colombo 07.
Palinda Wickramasinghe established the "Palinda Foundation" in 2018 and initiated a scholarship program for low-income students in Colombo North. This was initiated because of his belief that education is the key to development in low-income areas in Colombo.
Electoral History and Political Activity
Palinda presently (since October 2020) serving as the Coordinating Secretary (Vanni District) to Hon. Namal Rajapaksa, Cabinet Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports, Minister of Development Co-ordination and Monitoring and State Minister of Digital Technology and Enterprise Development.
He also contested from the Lunupokuna Ward, Colombo North Electoral for the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) at the 2018 Local Government Elections[18]. Given that Lunupokuna is a bastion of the United National Party, he ended up securing the second place, only behind the UNP candidate.
He has been active in local politics as well as national politics. He is an outspoken critic of the UNP government in Sri Lanka[19]. Also he's one of the District Coordinators of Sri Lanka Podujana Youth Front (SLPYF) in Vanni District (Vavuniya, Mullaitivu, Mannar).
Palinda Wickramasinghe was the first Sri Lankan to file a Civil Case under Criminal Negligence Charges against the Ex Secretary of Defense and the Ex Inspector General of Police[20] and making them responsible for the Easter Sunday attacks in Sri Lanka on 21st of April 2019[21].
