Palki Sharma Upadhyay (born 29 May 1982) is an Indian journalist and news anchor who serves as the Managing Editor at Firstpost, a digital news platform under Network18.[1] She is known for her programs that present global events from an Indian perspective and for her extensive coverage of international affairs.[2] Formerly, she was Managing Editor at WION and hosted the internationally acclaimed show Gravitas, which won the "Best International News Show in English" award at the News Broadcasting Awards (ENBA) in 2020.[3]
Early life and education
Palki Sharma was born on 29 May 1982 in Pilani, Rajasthan, and was raised in Delhi.[citation needed] She comes from a diverse family background—her father is a former Indian cricketer and her mother is a beautician.[4]
She completed her schooling at Loreto Convent, Tara Hall, Shimla.[5] She holds a Master's degree in Communication and Journalism from ICG Institute for Educational Research & Development, Jaipur.[6] She is also a certified C1 French learner from Alliance Française Delhi.[6]
Career
Early career
Sharma began her journalism career in 2002 with Doordarshan, India's national public broadcaster, as a news anchor and reporter.[4] During her college years, she had started writing for local newspapers, which led to her entry into broadcast journalism.[4] At Doordarshan, she was responsible for hosting regional and national television programs, as well as researching, formatting, and writing news stories.[citation needed]
In 2004, she joined Hindustan Times as a Staff Writer, where she covered civic and social issues.[citation needed] She also handled film reviews and copy-editing for the newspaper's Jaipur edition during her one-year tenure.[citation needed]
CNN-News18
In May 2005, Sharma joined CNN-News18 (formerly CNN-IBN) as an Anchor and Senior Editor, where she worked for over a decade.[4] During her tenure, she hosted various news and talk shows, conducted interviews with prominent personalities including cabinet ministers, opposition leaders, business leaders, social activists, artists, authors, sports personalities, and film stars.[citation needed] She also contributed to IBNLive.com by reviewing books and conducting live online chats on current affairs.[citation needed]
WION
In 2019, Sharma joined WION (World Is One News) as Managing Editor.[citation needed] At WION, she became the face of the prime-time international news show Gravitas, which gained global recognition for its analytical approach to international affairs.[2] The show won her the "Best International News Show in English" award at the News Broadcasting Awards (ENBA) in 2020.[3] Under her leadership, WION's YouTube channel garnered over 352 million views, surpassing several international and Indian English news channels.[3]
