Pan Yai-ku
Pan Kai-yu (Chinese: 潘开玉; born 1937) is a Chinese botanist and plant taxonomist specializing in the family Gesneriaceae, particularly the genus Oreocharis, and to a lesser extent Paeoniaceae. Her standard botanical author abbreviation is K.Y.Pan.[1]
She has contributed extensively to plant taxonomy in China and is a recognized contributor to the international project Flora of China.[2]
Biography
Pan Kai-yu was born in 1937 in China. She trained as a botanist and became a specialist in plant systematics. Her work has been published in both Chinese and international journals and is indexed in global taxonomic databases including IPNI,[1] the Biodiversity Heritage Library,[3] and Harvard University Herbaria.[4]
Scientific work
Pan is regarded as a specialist in Gesneriaceae taxonomy. Her research includes revisions of genera such as Oreocharis, Isometrum, and Tremacron, as well as studies on Paeonia. Her work has been published in journals such as Acta Phytotaxonomica Sinica (植物分类学报), a major botanical journal of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.[5]
Her contributions are widely cited in later systematic and phylogenetic studies of Asian Gesneriaceae.[6]
Taxa described
Pan Kai-yu has authored or co-authored numerous plant taxa recorded in IPNI. Examples include:
- Oreocharis tubiflora K.Y.Pan
- Oreocharis rotundifolia K.Y.Pan
- Oreocharis pinnatilobata K.Y.Pan
- Oreocharis rhombifolia K.Y.Pan
- Oreocharis sichuanica K.Y.Pan
- Oreocharis ronganensis K.Y.Pan
- Oreocharis villosa K.Y.Pan
- Oreocharis urceolata K.Y.Pan
- Oreocharis xiangguiensis W.T.Wang & K.Y.Pan
- Bournea leiophylla (W.T.Wang) W.T.Wang & K.Y.Pan
She also published earlier basionyms later incorporated into revised classifications, such as Tremacron aurantiacum K.Y.Pan, later renamed Oreocharis pankaiyuae in her honour.[7][8][9]
Chinese-language publications
Pan Kai-yu's work is extensively documented in Chinese botanical literature: [10] [11] [12]
Flora of China contributions
Pan Kai-yu was a contributor to the treatment of Gesneriaceae in Flora of China, a major collaborative flora published by Science Press (Beijing) and Missouri Botanical Garden Press.[13]
This volume provides comprehensive taxonomic treatments, identification keys, and species descriptions and is widely used as a global reference for Chinese vascular plants.[2]

Eponymy
The genus Pankycodon was named in her honour, reflecting her contributions to the taxonomy of Gesneriaceae.[14] The species Oreocharis pankaiyuae was renamed in her honour.[8][7]
Personal life
She is married to the Chinese botanist Hong De-Yuan, a specialist in plant taxonomy.[14]
