Panagiotis Christofas (born 13 October 1981) is a Greek engineer and politician who has been serving as the Mayor of Mytilene since 1 January 2024.[1]
Early life and education
Panagiots Christofas was born in Mytilene in 1981. He studied civil engineering at the National Technical University of Athens, where he also obtained two postgraduate degrees, specializing in Underground Works Design and Construction and in Water Resources Science and Technology.
Careers
Professional career
He worked as a civil engineer in the private sector, gaining experience in both public and private technical projects on the island of Lesvos.
Political career
In October 2018, he announced his candidacy for Regional Governor of the North Aegean, leading the slate “TOLMAME for the North Aegean.” In the regional elections held on 26 May 2019.[2]
In September 2020, Christofas was appointed Deputy Regional Governor for Planning, Industry, and Energy of the North Aegean,[3] with additional responsibilities related to the National Strategic Reference Framework (NSRF) added in October 2021. He resigned from this position in October 2022 after announcing his candidacy for the Municipality of Mytilene as head of the local political movement “BROSTA.” ("Forward")[4].
In the 2023 municipal elections, he was elected Mayor of Mytilene[5] in the first round with 54.84% of the vote, and assumed office on 1 January 2024.[6]
On 10 April 2024, he was appointed President of the Committee for Development and Support of Entrepreneurship of the Central Union of Municipalities of Greece (KEDE) by its Board of Directors[7]
