Paneveggio Roadblock

The Paneveggio Roadblock, also called Fort Buso or Fort Albun by the Italians, was an Austro-Hungarian roadblock built near the town of Paneveggio in Northern Italy. [1] Paneveggio was built between 1890-95 to block access to the Fiemme and Fassa Valleys. [2] [3] The fort consists of a 2-story blockhouse, and was surrounded by a deep moat. [1] Various trenches connected Paneveggio to Fort Dossaccio up the hill. [1] [2] The fort was equipped with 4 12cm guns, with other sources saying 6 9cm guns. The fort was renovated in 1912. In 1916, it was decided to add between 3 and 5 smaller field pieces to the fort's defense. [1] The wartime garrison was 4 officers and 134 enlisted men, while the peacetime garrison was 57 soldiers. [1] [2] Paneveggio was also connected to Forts Dossaccio and Buso by optical signals as well as telegraph. [2] Supposedly when the war broke out, the guns were removed and placed outside in field positions. This was incorrect however, as these were just tree trunks made to look like guns. [3]
Location
The roadblock is located on the edge of the Pale Di San Martino Natural Park. To reach it, pass through the village of Predazzo on the road up the Rolle Pass. The fort is right above the Lake Paneveggio dam, and is used by the company who operates the dam. Since the dam is privately owned, you must obtain a permit to enter. [1]
