Paola Luciani
Prof. Dr. Paola Luciani is an Italian full professor of Pharmaceutical Technology at the Department of Chemistry, Biochemistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Bern, Switzerland.[1]
Education
Luciani trained as a chemist at the University of Rome “La Sapienza” (Italy), where she received her Laurea (M.Sc. equivalent) in 2002 and her Ph.D. in 2005[1].
Career
After her doctorate, Luciani joined the University of Florence (Italy) as a postdoctoral researcher. She then moved to the Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology ETH Zürich, first as a postdoctoral researcher and then as a group leader in the Drug Formulation and Delivery group headed by Prof. Dr. Jean-Christophe Leroux. Luciani moved to the University of Jena (Germany) to become Associate Professor for Phospholipids in Drug Development and joined the University of Bern as Full Professor and head of the Pharmaceutical Technology Research Group in 2019[1].
Research
Luciani is widely regarded for her fundamental and applied contributions to drug delivery. She has published over 55 peer-reviewed manuscripts in top-rank scientific journals and is co-inventor on several patents[2]. Her specialism is in developing treatments for fibrotic diseases, most notably of the liver[3][4]; extracellular vesicles[5]; long-acting depot drug delivery systems[6]; local treatment of inflammatory bowel disease[7]; and analytical characterization of lipid-based drug delivery systems[8].
She sits on the editorial board of journal OpenNano, served as Associate Editor of the journal Biochemistry and Biophysics Reports (Elsevier) and was guest member of the APV Focus Group Drug Delivery.[9]
Luciani is an invited member of the Phospholipid Research Center’s Scientific Advisory Council and an elected specialist on the Human Medicine Expert Committee of Swissmedic, the Swiss Agency for Therapeutic Products.[2][9]
Service
Luciani is a Faculty member of the Office for Equal Opportunities at the University of Bern and a mentor to the Swiss Chemical Society’s Women in Chemistry mentoring programme.[9]
