Film director, screenwriter and academician

Paolo Bosisio (born 4 April 1949 in Milan) is an Italian film director, screenwriter and academician.

Born and raised in the center of Milan, Paolo Bosisio graduated with a degree in Modern Literature from the Faculty of Literature and Philosophy at the University of Milan with a dissertation entitled Cinema e Letteratura in Luchino Visconti (supervised by Sergio Antonielli).

From a very young age he trained to become an actor, frequently attending Teatro alla Scala with his grandmother. At the age of 9, Paolo put on his first show and was called “Bambino dalla mente vulcano” (Volcanic mind child) by Maria Saturno.[1].

His interest in theatre led him to approach it from various perspectives, such as practicing the art of puppetry and acting in amateur theatre companies. During his high school years, Paolo became director of the Theatre Company of his school. He was the lead actor in Night of January 16th, the theatrical play written by Russian-American author Ayn Rand. In May 1967 he staged The Importance of Being Earnes[2], a trivial comedy by Oscar Wilde, at Teatro San Babila, where a year later he also staged Le diavolerie[3] by Alessandro Fersen. On that occasion, Fantasio Piccoli noticed him and wanted him as an assistant to his Theatre Company, which belonged to Anna Proclemer and Ernesto Calindri.

Later, recommended by Fantasio Piccoli, Paolo became Luchino Visconti's main assistant for his show L'inserzione by Natalia Ginzburg.[4].

In 1972, for about eight years, Paolo began to work in the TV industry as director assistant to Mario Fattori and Edo Cacciari. In 1975 Paolo gained recognition for directing and editing the TV series Concerto a modo mio[5], produced by Gamma Film, which ran on TSI (Swiss Italian television, today RSI).

Paolo steadily worked as TV director until 1980 and occasionally in the following years. From 1978 till 1986 he cooperated with the Gazzetta di Mantova[6] as a dramatic critic, and obtained enrolment in the National Order of Journalists[7].

Since 1986 he has been in charge of the design and direction of many world-class companies and brands events. Among them stands out the recreation of the Ancient Olympic Games, which took place in the archeological site of Selinunte in Sicily in 1994.[8] The successful event involved 14000 spectators and was broadcasted on 64 TV networks.

Starting in the nineties, he focused exclusively on theatrical work in Italy and around many foreign countries in Europe and in Asia.

From 1999 until 2002, Paolo became the artistic director of Teatro del Vittoriale degli Italiani[9], an open-air theatre with 1.600 seats. From 2002 until 2004, he was the artistic director of Metropoli Ballet Festival in Milan, Farnese Opera Festival in Piacenza and Sforzesco Ballet Festival in Vigevano.[8] From 2003 until 2005, he was the lead director of Premio Festival Teatro - Arlecchino d’oro, sponsored by Mantova Foundation (European Capital of Performing Arts)[8]. From 2008 until 2015, Paolo directed the historical Teatro Giacosa in Ivrea and the Teatro Municipale Villani in Biella. He's also the creator of the summer season of the Festival - Palcoscenico sotto le stelle in Ivrea.[8]

Since 2017, Paolo Bosisio has been part of the cast of the Italian docu-reality Il collegio as school principal (except for the second season, when he was replaced with Alberto Faverio).[10] The show achieved high ratings (of around 11% in 2020) and Bosisio has gained popularity as an actor.

Academic career

After graduating in 1973 Paolo Bosisio started his six-month collaboration with Sergio Antonielli, after which Guido Bezzola (full-time professor of Italian Literature) requested him as his assistant, a role that he covered from 1974 till 1980. In 1987, after winning a national contest, he became associate and then full professor of History of Theatre and Performing Arts at the Faculty of Letters and Philosophy of the University of Milan[11].

In 2000 he became Head of the Department of History of Performing Arts, also teaching Management of Cultural Facilities for live performances. He was nominated as director of the doctorate in Theory and History of theatrical dramatic performances at Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore from 1992 till 1996.[12]

From 2000 to 2011 he became the director of the Department of Arts at the University of Milan. In 2005 until 2011, he was the director of the Degree program of Heritage Science. For a year, in 2003, he was the professeur associé at the Sorbonne Paris III and from 2004 to 2005 he was the professor of Stage Management and Production at the Faculty of Economics at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan[8].

In the period of 1975 up to 2010 Paolo was nominated Italian language teacher for the international Courses of Italian Language and Culture in Gargano, and many times nominated as Director and Councillor of CALCIF (Centro d'ateneo per la promozione della lingua e cultura italiana).[13]

From 1990 to 1999 he was Board Member and then vice-president (in 1994) of ISU (Istituto per il diritto allo studio universitario)[14]

Moreover, in 1990, he organized and supervised the annual residential seminar, Settimana del Teatro at the University of Gargano. Bosisio gathered students and the most prominent figures of the contemporary artistic scene. The workshops results dedicated to Luca Ronconi, Massimo Castri, Gianfranco De Bosio, Luigi Squarzina, Mario Missiroli, Giorgio Strehler, Giuseppe Patroni Griffi, Pietro Garinei and Maurizio Scaparro were published in a series of books called Quaderni di Gargnano – I protagonisti del teatro contemporaneo (which represents the first contribution to the history of the theatre direction in Italy)[15]

From 1995 to 2003 He was the professor of History of Theatre at the School of Dramatic Arts of Piccolo Teatro, directed by Giorgio Strehler and later by Luca Ronconi.[8]

Paolo Bosisio is hosted in many national and international conferences as Chief Scientific Officer, President and speaker. He was invited by Universities and Theaters to give lectures in different cities in Italy or abroad: Sorbonne, Lione, Avignon (France); Harvard, New York, UCLA, Berkeley, San Francisco State University, Providence (USA); Toronto (Canada); Dublin (Ireland); Glasgow (United Kingdom); Nur-Sultan (Kazakhstan); Innsbruck (Austria); Warsaw, Krakow, Łódź (Poland); Stockholm (Sweden); Sydney (Australia); Beijing, Shanghai (China).
