Paolo Ferragina (born June 27, 1969) is an Italian computer scientist, doing research in Algorithms for Big Data, Data compression and Text/Graph indexing. He is a full professor of Algorithms and Vice-Rector on ICT and Innovation at the University of Pisa.[1]
Education and career
He received his Laurea in Information Science from the University of Pisa in 1992, and a PhD in Computer Science from the same university in 1996. He got a Post-doc from the Max-Planck Institut fur Informatik in 1998. Since 2007 he has been a full professor of Computer Science at the University of Pisa. From 2010 to 2016 he was Vice-Rector on Applied Research and Innovation at the University of Pisa.
Research interests
He is an expert in four main lines:
- Compressed Data Structures, being the co-author of FM-index[2]
- Learned Data Structures, being the co-author of PMG-index[3]
- Data Compression, being the co-author of Brotli[4]
- Sports Analytics, being the co-author and co-founder of PlayeRank[5][6][7]
He has published widely in international journals and conferences[8]. He was a member of the steering committees of the conferences SPIRE – Symposium on String Processing and Information Retrieval[9](2006-2009), ESA - European Symposium on Algorithms[10](2012-2014)). Currently, he is a member of the editorial board of the Journal on Graph Algorithms and Applications (JGAA)[11], and he is one of the editors of the Encyclopedia on Algorithms by Springer[12], and the Encyclopedia on BigData Technologies by Springer.[13]. He has 4 US patents granted, and 3 patents pending[14]
