Pape Ale Niang
Template:Prod llm/dated Pape Alé Niang is a Senegalese journalist and media executive. He is the director general of Radiodiffusion Television Senegalaise (RTS), Senegal's public broadcaster. He was previously editor and director of the online news outlet Dakar Matin.[1][2] Niang became discussed internationally after a series of arrests and legal proceedings in 2022 and 2023 that were criticised by press freedom organisations and covered by international media.[3][4]
Arrests and legal proceedings
Niang was arrested in Dakar in 2022. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists. Prosecutors charged him with offences including disclosure of information likely to harm national defence and dissemination of false information likely to discredit public institutions.[3] CPJ reported that the charges related to a Dakar Matin video in which Niang discussed an internal gendarmerie report connected to the legal case involving opposition politician Ousmane Sonko.[3]
Niang was later released on bail under conditions that included restrictions on travel and speaking publicly about the case.[5] He was later rearrested, and his detention drew criticism from journalists and press freedom organisations.[6] The Guardian reported that United Nations Special Rapporteur Mary Lawlor had called for his release and access to medical care while he was on hunger strike in detention.[4]
