Biography[edit]
In 2002, Park Ji-Won was appointed as a fighter pilot for the South Korean army[1]. She, along with two other women, Major Park Ji-yeon and Major Ha Jung-mi. Park Ji-won belonged to the 203 Fighter Squadron under the 8th Fighter Wing and along with these other women, was the first female fighter pilot in South Korea. She then began flying the FA-50 light attack jets.
She joined the academy in 1998, making her the first female pilot flying KF-16 jets in 2007. Becoming a fighter pilot and then director of operations was no easy task as the training and requirements are quite rigorous. Park Ji-won had to prove her high-quality communication and leadership skills while building an expansive network of communication, and prove her ability in the planes themselves[2]. High flight-experience is a crucial requirement for the job.
In January of 2017, Park Ji-won, along with the other two women, were appointed to the role of Director of Operations, which is the second highest position one can hold when a member of a fighter squadron. As a Director of Operations, Park Ji-won is responsible for supervising operational missions within the 203 Fighter Squadron. She also trains new pilots.
Park Ji-won was very proud of her role in the army, quoted as saying “I have great pride flying the FA-50 and defending the nation's airspace. As I assume this heavy responsibility, I will give my every effort to complete my duties”.
