Park Sam-koo (Korean: 박삼구; born March 19, 1945) is a South Korean businessman who served as the chairman of Kumho Asiana Group, a large South Korean chaebol. He also served as the CEO of Asiana Airlines and Kumho Tire. He resigned from management in 2019 amid financial controversies surrounding the group.
Early life and education
Park was born in Gwangju as the third son of Park In-cheon, the founder of Kumho Asiana Group. He graduated from Gwangju Jeil High School and received a bachelor's degree in economics from Yonsei University. In 2004, he was awarded an honorary doctorate in business administration from Chonnam National University for his contribution to regional economic development.[1]
Career
Park joined Kumho Tire in 1967 and held various executive positions within the group. He became the chairman of Kumho Asiana Group in 2002. Under his leadership, the group aggressively expanded by acquiring Daewoo E&C in 2006 and Korea Express in 2008. However, the global financial crisis of 2008 led to a liquidity crisis for the group, forcing the resale of these assets.
He resigned from all posts in March 2019 following accounting issues at Asiana Airlines and the controversial "no-meal fiasco" on flights.[2]
Legal issues
In August 2022, Park was sentenced to 10 years in prison for embezzlement and breach of trust regarding unfair inter-affiliate trading to support his control over the group.[3]
