Patagon Journal is a bilingual, international magazine about nature, the environment, culture, travel and outdoor sports in Patagonia and the world's last wild places.

History and profile[edit]

Patagon Journal was founded in 2011 [1]and is based in northern Patagonia, in the lakeside resort town of Puerto Varas.

The mission of the magazine is to build a greater appreciation, understanding and environmental protection of Chilean and Argentine Patagonia and the world's last wild places [2].

Published in both print and digital formats, the magazine is bilingual, written in English and Spanish, and combines long-form stories with abundant photography[3]. The executive editor, Jimmy Langman[4], is a longtime foreign correspondent who formerly wrote for Newsweek and several newspapers in the U.S. and U.K.

Over the years, Patagon Journal has featured notable environmentalists, outdoor athletes, photographers, and writers such as Chris Burkard, Alex Honnold, Yvon Chouinard, Douglas Tompkins[5], Kris Tompkins[6], Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Roger Payne, Peter Essick, Simon Worrall, Enric Sala, Amory Lovins, Tomás Munita, Luis Sepúlveda, Richard Bangs, Bárbara Hernández, and Gregory Crouch.

Patagonia Photo Contest[edit]

Since 2012, the magazine has organized the Patagonia Photo Contest, which is open to amateur and professional photographers and described by the magazine as a contest that "celebrates the immense beauty of the natural and cultural patrimony of the Patagonia region of Chile and Argentina through the eyes of photographers from around the world." Winners are chosen among four categories: Nature, Environment, Travel & Culture, and Outdoor Sports. The top photos are later featured in photo expositions[7]and published in the commemorative book Patagonia in Photos[8]."[9]
