Patrick K. Ryan is the County Executive of Ulster County, serving since June 7, 2019 after having first been elected on April 30, 2019.[1][2]

Early life, education and career[edit]

Ryan, a native of Ulster Country, graduated from Kingston High School in 2000. After high school, he earn an acceptance to the U.S. Military Academy graduating with a BS in international relations, receiving distinguished cadet honors in 2004.[3] Upon graduation, Ryan served as a Military Intelligence officer in the Army, deploying twice to Iraq.[4] After leaving the military he co-founded technology national security companies in Washington, DC.[5] During his time in DC, Ryan earned a MA in security studies from Georgetown University.[6]

Political career[edit]

Ryan won a special election on April 30th, 2019 for the county executive seat after Michael P. Hein resigned from the position to serve in Governor Andrew Cuomo's cabinet as the Commissioner of the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance.[7] He had previously run unsuccessfully for New York's 19th congressional district in 2018, placing second in the democratic primary to the eventual winner Antonio Delgado.[8] He gained particular attention for campaigning on stronger gun control laws.[9]
