Patrick 'Paddy' McDonnell (disambiguation: Patrick McDonnell) is an Irish comedian from Belfast, Northern Ireland. He has appeared on BBC Northern Ireland's 'The Blame Game' on two occasions in 2021[1] & 2022. [2] In 2023, McDonnell also began touring his first arena events titled 'Stories' in the SSE Arena in Belfast [3] and the Millennium Forum in Derry/Londonderry. [4]
Early Life[edit]
McDonnell grew up in the Divis flats area of West Belfast, during the latter years of the troubles where he experienced British army patrols and the effects of the conflict on the predominately nationalist areas of Belfast.[5]
Career[edit]
McDonnell began working in comedy after a traumatic incident where he suffered the removal of the tip of his finger from a person at a bar where he was working as a doorman. He said this about the incident: "In 2007, me and my wife were getting married and I took on a job as a doorman. While working there, I got my finger bitten off. It set me into depression and I went into a dark place. It took four years for it to go to court and it was really affecting me."[6]
Following this, after noticing a change in his demeanour, McDonnell's wife searched for comedy nights in Belfast, “She looked up comedy nights in Belfast and saw that there was one in the Pavilion Bar on the Ormeau Road. She contacted the guy who was running it, Graham Watson, and he said to bring me over on the Monday night." He described the feeling of performing comedy live as “...like euphoria. The feeling I got on that stage was unreal. I went into comedy full on and I was driving around Ireland performing for free.”[7]
McDonnell also appears as one half of the podcast 'Mudblood' with fellow Northern Ireland comedian and writer William Thompson.[8] The name of the podcast refers to the derogatory Harry Potter phrase to describe someone as 'half-blood' or 'muggle' [9], owing to the fact that the two hosts are of opposing sides of the religious divide in Northern Ireland. He has also appeared on other Northern Ireland based podcasts including 'Tea With Me' hosted by Shane Todd [10] and 'General Banter' hosted by Colin Geddis. [11]
Material[edit]
McDonnell's material primarily focuses on his early years in West Belfast, as well as his days spent working the various jobs throughout his life including as a taxi driver, joiner on building sites and as a doorman. McDonnell also features observational comedy on various celebrities throughout Northern Ireland.
