Patrick Treacy is an Irish physician and aesthetic medicine specialist known for his contributions to cosmetic procedures and his work as the founder of the Ailesbury Clinic in Dublin, Ireland. He has gained recognition for his international career and notable associations, including treating the late pop star Michael Jackson during Jackson's stay in Ireland in 2006.
Early Life and Education
Patrick Treacy was born in 1960 in Garrison, County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland, where his parents ran a shop, garage, and fuel station. He attended Queen's University Belfast during the height of the Northern Ireland conflict, known as "The Troubles." An incident involving paramilitary forces during his time there led him to transfer to the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in Dublin to complete his medical education.[1]
Treacy's early career included international experiences, such as working as a health doctor at Ibn 'al Bitar Hospital in Baghdad, Iraq, during Saddam Hussein's regime in 1990. While traveling through Kurdistan to report on the Halabja chemical attacks, he was detained by the Iraqi Army near Erbil for five days.[2]
Career
Treacy began his medical career in Dublin in the late 1980s and later worked in New Zealand as a respiratory and cardiology registrar at Dunedin Hospital. His international work also included serving as a ship's surgeon in Florida.[3] In 2000, he founded the Ailesbury Clinic in Dublin, one of the first facilities in Ireland dedicated to aesthetic medicine, followed by a second clinic in Cork in 2005.[4]
Treacy has been involved in advancing aesthetic medicine, notably through the introduction of hyaluronidase protocols for managing complications from cosmetic procedures.[5] He has also authored books, including Behind the Mask (2015), co-written with Frances Kenny, which reflects on his career and high-profile clients, and Prevention and Management of Aesthetic Complications (2022), a textbook on best practices in the field.[6][7]
Association with Michael Jackson
In 2006, Treacy treated Michael Jackson during the singer's extended stay in Ireland. According to Treacy, their professional relationship developed into a friendship, with Jackson expressing interest in collaborating on a concert in South Africa to support children affected by HIV/AIDS, reflecting Treacy's own charitable interests.[8] Treacy has discussed this period in interviews and his memoir, though some details, such as the use of propofol, have been subject to scrutiny following Jackson's death in 2009.[9]
Charitable Work
Treacy has been active in charitable initiatives, particularly in Africa, where he has provided medical services and advocated for healthcare improvements, with a focus on HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment.[10]
Awards and Recognition
Treacy has received several awards for his contributions to aesthetic medicine, including the "Top Aesthetic Practitioner in the World" at the MyFaceMyBody Global Awards in Las Vegas in 2018 and the "Irish Man of the Year 2024" award.[11][12]
