Patrick (Pat) Unwin BSc, MA, DPhil, DSc, FRSC is Professor and Head of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Warwick.[1] He is known for the invention of instrumental electrochemical techniques, particularly imaging methods used to visualize the electrochemical activity of electrodes at the nanoscale. He has authored more than 400 papers and patents, and is highly cited.[2]
Early life and education
Unwin was born and raised in Great Preston, West Yorkshire and was educated at local state schools, attending Brigshaw Comprehensive School (now Brigshaw High School), Allerton Bywater, Castleford from 1975-82. He was an undergraduate in Chemistry at the University of Liverpool, graduating with a BSc Hons degree in 1985 as the top-ranked student (Leverhulme Prize[3] and Leblanc Medal). He moved to the University of Oxford, completing a DPhil in 1989 on ‘Hydrodynamic Electrodes and the Study of Interfacial Reaction Mechanisms’,[4] in the Physical Chemistry Laboratory, supervised by Richard Compton. Unwin was a graduate student at St John’s College, Oxford (1985-87) and Dee graduate scholar at St Hugh’s College, Oxford (1987-88).
Research and career
Unwin was elected to a Junior Research Fellowship at Balliol College, Oxford in 1988 and was a member of the Governing Body. In 1990, he won a SERC-NATO Fellowship and moved to the University of Texas at Austin, USA, where he worked with Allen Bard on the development of scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM), for the quantitative measurement of electrochemical kinetics. Unwin returned to the UK at the end of 1991, taking up a lectureship in physical chemistry at the University of Warwick, where he was promoted to senior lecturer (1996) and then Professor of Chemistry (since 1998). He was appointed Head of Department in August 2023.[1] He was awarded DSc in 2008 by Warwick.
Unwin established the Warwick Electrochemistry & Interfaces Group[5][6] and was the founding Director of the EPSRC-Warwick Centre for Analytical Sciences (2008-11), now the Warwick Analytical Science Centre[7] and founding Director of the EPSRC-Warwick Molecular Analytical Science Centre for Doctoral Training (2014-23).[8] Between 2010-15, Unwin held an ERC Advanced Investigator Grant to develop innovative flux imaging techniques[9] and between 2017-22 he held a Royal Society-Wolfson Research Merit Award.
Unwin’s research centres on the visualization of interfacial fluxes, which govern myriad processes in electrochemistry, cell biology, materials science (e.g. corrosion and crystallization) and geochemistry.[10][11] Unwin and his group are particularly well known for inventing nanoscale electrochemical imaging techniques that provide new models for processes at electrodes (batteries, electrocatalysts, etc.) and other interfaces (biological cells, crystals).[12] AFM-SECM,[13] intermittent contact-SECM,[14] and scanning electrochemical cell microscopy (SECCM)[15] were invented in his lab and are now commercial products from, respectively, Bruker (PeakForce SECM),[16] BioLogic,[17] Park Instruments[18] and HEKA.[19] Unwin chaired and organized the influential Faraday Discussion on Single Entity Electrochemistry in 2016[20] that brought together disparate topics with common challenges to create this new field of the ‘electrochemistry of one thing at a time’[21] and he outlined a vision for the future of nanoelectrochemistry, within a historical perspective,[22] at the Faraday Discussion on Next Generation Nanoelectrochemistry.[23]
Unwin has been a member of the Editorial Committee of Annual Review of Analytical Chemistry since 2016 and the Editorial Board of ChemElectroChem[24] since 2018. He was Joint Editor of Journal of Electroanalytical Chemistry[25] from 2011-15, having been a member of the editorial board from 2004, and is a member of the Honorary Board (former editors) since 2015. He was a member of editorial board of the ACS journal Langmuir (2014-22) and Electrochemistry Communications (1999-2017).[26] He was Associate Editor of Analytical Sciences (Japan Society for Analytical Chemistry) from 2005-08.[27]
Outside science, Unwin has written and recorded songs with his band paparoro, including the album Ballad of Adam ‘Ballad of Adam’],[28] with some of the songs broadcast on BBC Introducing on BBC Coventry and Warwickshire Radio. He occasionally performs live in several local cover bands (vocals, keyboards, guitar).
