Patriot Democracy is a human rights organisation based in South Africa, founded by Arthur Magnes Carta in December 2019 and publicly launched on the 6th of March 2021. Patriot Democracy was founded to address the lack of education around how Democracies work and the power of a vote in post Apartheid South Africa.

Through the education around human rights and how they empower people in poverty, Patriot Democracy believes the poor and disenfranchised citizens of South Africa will be able to empower themselves by holding politicians accountable and uplifting themselves out of poverty.

Historical Context[edit]

The creation of Patriot Democracy was on the backdrop and culmination of several events and escalating crises in South Africa.

  • Twenty years of Democracy in South Africa saw declining voter turnout and increased resentment of the ruling party, with the lowest turnout among the South African youth.[1][2]
  • ANC voters and supporters, when faced with state capture and rampant corruption would rather not vote than switch their vote.[3]
  • Increasing government hostility and legislated control of the private sector leading to low growth and rising unemployment.[4]
  • With declining support and reports of massive corruption and state capture, the ANC ruling party in the 2017 party conference decided to endorse and pursue land expropriation without compensation (EWC).[5]
  • ANC ignores warnings and critisims of pursueing land exproprioation policies and laws.[6]

Immature Democracy Issues[edit]

When reviewing the failings of the South African state, a significant and consistent theme is how the ANC government can act with impunity and without any repercussions. A common theme found in immature democracies[7] created through a liberation movement[8], where the liberation movement that moves into power retains a loyal voter base regardless of their performance.

The attributes of an immature democracy are often found on poor education levels of the majority of the electorate, that don't understand how to use their vote in a democracy to hold political leaders accountable.

Founding Principles[edit]

Looking to address the primary issues of an immature democracy, Patriot Democracy was founded on several key principles.[9]

  • Fear of personal attacks silences many from speaking out and actively participating in a democracy.
  • Voter apathy is founded on a lack of education and understanding of how political accountability works.
  • Without active participation in a democracy by citizens through voting determines the success of a democracy.
  • The combination of human rights and democracy has a direct correlation with a decline in poverty and reduction in state dependency.
  • Levering human rights in a democracy require education, active community participation and reinforcing strong family values.
