Patruni Chidananda Sastry also called Sas3 is an Indian expressionist[1] dancer and performer.[2] He was born on 25th December in Kharagpur, West Bengal and presently lives in Hyderabad.[3] Patruni Sastry has performed dance shows across India, as well as conducted workshops.[4] Patruni is known for his dance style “Indian expressionism” within which he is well known for his performance on social issues and activism.[5]
Patruni has created styles like Sufiyattam[6] and Pseudo Natyam. He uses dance to talk about tabooed subjects such as LGBTQIA issues[7], sexual education[8] and gender equality.[9] He identifies himself as gender fluid.[10] Patruni learnt Classical dance form Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi and Odissi. Initially started performing as a traditional artist and slowly moved to contemporary art. Patruni also went through training of Butoh under Adam Koan.[11] He made renditions of Butoh and developed a new style called Butohnatyam.[12] Patruni has given TEDx Talks and actively voiced out his activism for LGBTQIA[13] and transgender rights.[14] Patruni carries a bachelor’s degree in Engineering from Bankura Unnayani institute of technology and an MBA from Jaipur National University. He also holds a Diploma in Bharatanatyam.[15][16][17]
Patruni was criticized for his work of bringing Western Revolutionary Renaissance to Indian Dance styles. His using elements of Happenings and Anti Art style into Indian Classical dance was condemned by the traditionalists. While his approach towards LGBTQIA+ issue made people call him gay or bisexual.[18][19][20]
