Recognized as an international expert in color and trend forecasting,[3] Carpenter is a consultant with Pantone[4][5] and is The Global Design Trend Specialist for the AmericasMart in Atlanta[6][7] and The Global Trend Ambassador for Maison et Objet in America and Paris.[8][9] Her eponymous home textiles brand, Carpenter + Company, is sold internationally.

Personal History

Fashion and housewares designer Patti Yvonne Carpenter was born on May 2, 1955 in Washington, D.C. to Vivian and Horace Carpenter. She graduated with honors from McKinley Technical Senior High School in 1973. She then continued her education at Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, receiving her B.A. degree in fashion design and fashion illustration in 1975 and 1976, respectively.[10] Carpenter currently lives in New York City.

Design Work

Carpenter went on to work in the fashion industry, with Scott Barrie, Bill Blass, Oscar De La Renta, Gloria Vanderbilt, Adrienne Vittadini, Cynthia Rowley, Peter Max, The Limited Corporation, Timberland, and Ralph Lauren.

Carpenter became disillusioned with the garment industry after twenty-five years, and turned her interests to home furnishings. She founded Continuum Home, Inc. in 2000 and Carpenter + Company in 2006, which specialized in home décor, personal accessories and gifts, and produced a branded collection of textiles to offer private label development worldwide with a focus on cultural/artisan sustainability and fair wages. As a design, color and trend consultant and merchandiser, Carpenter works with clients such as the Worth Collection, the Exploris Museum, and Agexpront of Guatemala country originals.

Carpenter has designed, sourced, created and licensed private label collections for brands including Bloomingdale's, The Phillips Collection, Sferra, Neiman Marcus, Ralph Lauren, Donna Karan Urban Zen, Crate & Barrel, ABC Carpet and Home, and JC Penney. She has traveled and worked in fifty-six countries and has spoken and written on color, trend and design around the globe.[11]

Artisan Work

At age 45 Patti Carpenter took a life-changing project with Aid to Artisans Archived 2009-05-20 at the Portuguese Web Archive that took her to Mali, West Africa. The project inspired her to begin working with South American artisans in Bolivia[12], Guatemala[13], Nicaragua, and Honduras[14] as well as Africa.

Working with the International Executive Service Corps and Aid for Artisans,[15] and The Africa Craft Trust,[16] Carpenter works extensively with artisans in emerging markets to design products that can be produced using indigenous forms and methods, and then sold across broader markets including home design, to well-known American retailers such as Bloomingdale's, Neiman Marcus, and Crate & Barrel.

Carpenter's work has been featured in Metropolitan Home, O, The Oprah Magazine,[17] Essence, Anthology, Lucky, Better Homes and Gardens, Real Simple, and Elle Décor Magazine, as well as in catalogues including Gumps, Sundance, Dean & Deluca, Viva Terra, Neiman Marcus and Bloomingdales.[18]
