Paul Bailey (Journalist)

Paul Bailey is the Editor of The Australian Financial Review, Australia's premier source of business, financial and political news. He is a two-time Walkley Award winner, including the Gold Walkley. Bailey began his career as a freelance journalist before obtaining a cadetship on The Sydney Morning Herald newspaper. He left journalism briefly to work as a press secretary to the NSW Minister for Education before returning to The Sydney Morning Herald. It was as Environment Writer on the Herald that he won his Walkley awards with fellow journalist Alan Tate. The awards were for a series of stories about pollution on Sydney beaches. Bailey became Chief-of-Staff, News Editor and Deputy Editor of The Sydney Morning Herald before he quit Fairfax Media to take the role of Editor of The Bulletin, a weekly news magazine. He later served as Editor-in-Chief of The Bulletin. His next move was to Channel Nine as news editor of the nightly news. He then returned to Fairfax to the role of Deputy Editor on The Australian Financial Review, overseeing the paper's political and overseas bureaus and their coverage. He was later appointed managing editor. In a change of leadership he became Editor of the Financial Review with Michael Stutchbury as Editor-in-Chief. He was appointed Editor-in-Chief Business, overseeing the business coverage of the Financial Review, The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald. He returned as editor of the Financial Review in 2016. Bailey has also served on the judging board of the Walkley Awards and as its chairman.
