Paul Brodie is a Canadian bicycle frame builder, motorcycle racer, fabricator, designer, and the founder of Brodie research. Brodie was one of the first people to build mountain bike frames with a sloping top tube.[1][2][3] [4] He is a member of the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame.[5][6]

Early years[edit]

Brodie was born in Southampton, England. His family moved to Canada.[7][8]

Career[edit]

Brodie's first bicycle job was for the Peddlar bicycle shop, assembling bicycles.[9] Later, he went on to work for Rocky Mountain between 1984 and 1986. There, Brodie, who was known as an artist and gearhead[10] began his work at Sherpa Manufacturing (owned by Rocky Mountain), as a painter.[11] He eventually moved on to welding the mountain bike frames in 1985, when Rocky Mountain Bicycles began producing and supplying their own brand mountain and road bikes across Canada.

The Vancouver trademark "sloping top tube" frame design was initiated in the same year when Brodie built a unique new mountain bike frame design for Jacob Heilbron.[12][13][14][15]

In 1986, he left Rocky Mountain to start Brodie Bikes.[16][17]

Sale to Cybersport[edit]

CyberSport Ltd. bought the brand and assumed the worldwide distribution of Brodie Bicycles in 1994. At this time five production models were offered as complete bikes. In time, the Brodie brand was expanded to include roadbikes, hybrids and touring bikes.[18]

University of the Fraser Valley frame building course[edit]

Brodie taught frame Building 101 at the University of the Fraser Valley in Abbotsford, British Columbia. His influence on frame design and construction has been passed to a new generation of frame makers, through the course.[19][20][21][22][23]

Accomplishments[edit]

  • Built a sloping top tube mountain bike frame. This was the first bicycle frame he had ever built, and it was designed to fit smaller mountain bike wheels. Brodie was unaware of Charlie Cunningham's aluminum sloping top tube mountain bike prototype, built a few years before. However, a few years later he would get to visit Charlie at his workshop, and upon seeing a similar bicycle to his own, made by a master frame builder, he knew he was on the right track.[25][26]
  • Gatorblade fork: While most bicycle forks are welded together, the gatorblade had a machined crown and the fork legs were bolted onto it.[27]
  • Brodie brake booster: A machined aluminum archway designed to be bolted onto cantilever brakes to boost their stopping power, by adding stiffness and rigidity to them.[28][29]
  • Reverse seat collar:A forward facing seat collar, and slit in the seattube to prevent water and debris from contaminating the inside of the seat tube.[30]
  • Built a one of a kind gearbox DH bike, called the 69er.[31][32][33]
  • Was commisioned by a member of the antique motorcycle club of america to build a working replica steam powered bicycle from 1896[34][35]
  • Designed and built an electric bike, called the eBee.[39]
  • Created over 4000 hand-built bicycle frames[40]

Motorcycles[edit]

Brodie built a working replica 1919 excelsior motorcycle, from only a few photographs he could find.[41][42][43] [44][45][46][47][48]

In addition he has also designed and built motorcycle frames, and parts[49][50] Not to mention restoring other vintage motorcycles [51] He ran Aermacchi Northwest, a source for vintage aermacchi motorcycle parts.[52]

His motorcycle restorations were to a standard where, in 1998, his work was exhibited at New York’s The Guggenheim art museum in The Art of the Motorcycle exhibition.[53][54]

He was inducted into the Greater Vancouver Motorsport Pioneer Society in 2019.[55]

He also raced motorcycles[56]. He was involved in a life-threatening motorcycle crash, during a warm up lap for a race. [57][58]

YouTube career[edit]

Paul started Youtube channel on April 4, 2020, along with videographer and riding partner Mitch.[59][60][61] The channel has 65,600 followers, and 6,544,161 views.[62]
