Career
Immediately after graduating from college, Hsu became an industrial engineer for Chesebrough Manufacturing Company in Jefferson City, MO. He then joined the defense contractor Harris Corporation, as a production engineer in Fort Walton Beach, FL until starting his own company, Manufacturing Technology Incorporated (MTI) in 1984 in Fort Walton Beach, FL.[1]
In 1998, Hsu founded Total Parts Plus (TPP) to provide a web-based product to identify, monitor, and track parts obsolescence.[2] Its data collection and validation services along with the suite of software tools and applications provide a comprehensive solution for data analysis and compliance reporting.[3]
In 1998, Hsu acquired a small bankrupt company, ActiGraph, that provides medical grade accelerometry monitors that provide comprehensive data monitoring, analysis, and management support. Sold in 2020, he still retains 22% and a seat on the board.[4]
Accolades, Recognitions & Awards
In 2006, Hsu served as National Chairman of the International Leadership Foundation in Washington, D.C., a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that promotes the civic awareness, public service, and economic effectiveness of the Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) community.[5]
In 2007, He was appointed as the associate administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) Office of Government Contracting and Business Development under President George W. Bush.[6] In 2010 he was named to the National Advisory Council on Minority Business Enterprise.[7]
He has also been a member of the Civic Leaders Advisory Group to the Chief of Staff of the United States Air Force[8], as well as a member of the President’s Export Council, a government organization that serves as the principal national advisory committee on international trade.[9]
Hsu and his companies have also received several awards over the years including the National Small Business Prime Contractor of the Year (1991)[10]; the State of Florida Governor’s Business Ambassador Award (2014)[10]; Department of Defense (DoD) “Quality Vendor” in the 90's[10]; Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award for the State of Florida in Technology/ Communications (2001)[10]; SBA Hall of Fame (2003[10]); U.S. Chamber of Commerce Corporate Stewardship Award (2004[10]); and Daughters of the American Revolution Americanism Medal (2016)[10].
2019 - Present Day:
In September 2019, Hsu received the University of Central Missouri Distinguished Alumni Award.[11]
In September 2016 and again in 2020, He was among the list of individuals selected to represent Donald Trump’s Asian-American Advisory Committee for APA for Trump..[12] The men and women on the committee engage with Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) on relevant issues, including educational opportunities, employment, and the economy, according to a press release from the Donald Trump campaign.[13] Hsu served as the Chair of Commission and was an appointed Advisory Board Member for the Asian Pacific American (APA) for Trump (2016 and 2020).[14]
In May 2019, Hsu was named by President Donald Trump to serve in a 2-year Appointment on the President’s Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (PAC AAPI).[15] Sworn in January 2020, Hsu was named Chair of the Commission of 14 members tasked by the Executive Order on Economic Empowerment of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (EO 13872) that was issued on May 13, 2019.[16] In December 2020, The President’s Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (PAC-AAPI) submitted their 2020 Report: Advancing Economic Empowerment for Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders – A Call to Action.[17] The Report proposes actionable recommendations for the Executive Branch to enhance economic resources and to implement transformational solutions that ensure full AAPI participation in the U.S. economy.[17] Specifically, and in accordance with the President’s Executive Order 13872 on Economic Empowerment of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, the Commission recommends the following: 1) Report better data on the AAPI experience; 2) Expand AAPI workforce development opportunities; 3) Enhance access to economic resources and opportunities for AAPI-owned enterprises; and, 4) Improve the economic condition of U.S. Pacific Islanders[17]. This report is intended to provide a roadmap for the Executive Branch to implement transformational solutions that ensure full AAPI participation in the U.S. economy.[18]
In January 2021, Hsu was appointed to represent HSU Educational Foundation by the then Secretary of US Department of Transportation, Elaine Chao, to serve a 2 year term on the Drone Advisory Committee (DAC).[19] The FAA's Drone Advisory Committee (DAC) (PDF) is a broad-based, long-term Federal advisory committee that provides the FAA with advice on key UAS integration issues by helping to identify challenges and prioritize improvements.[19] The committee helps to create broad support for an overall integration strategy and vision.[19] In July 2021, Hsu was tasked by Chair Houston Mills to Co-Lead Task Group 12, Integrating Unmanned Aircraft Operations Into K-12 Curriculums.[20]
In February 2021, Hsu was appointed by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis to serve as a Board of Trustee for the University of West Florida (UWF) on the Academic Affairs committee.[21]
Published Works
In 2014, Hsu published his first book titled Guardians of the Dream: The Enduring Legacy of America's Immigrants, which sold over 10,000 copies[22]. The story focuses on Hsu’s journey to the United States and how he turned the opportunity and idea of the “American Dream” into great success. The book makes the case that immigrants are an integral part of the American texture.[22]
Hsu tells stories of other immigrants who have fostered the entrepreneurial spirit and achieved great success, thus, enriching the American economy and improving our ability to compete in the world, becoming the guardians of a lasting legacy.[22] According to the book’s website, Guardians of the Dream challenges those who fear that America’s greatness is fading by telling an optimistic and insightful story about the remarkable entrepreneurial immigrant spirit of those who make this country great.[22]
Charitable Work
Hsu established the Dr. Paul and Majes-Maggie Hsu Endowed Engineering Scholarship in 2002, which rewards outstanding students in pursuit of a career in engineering.[23]
Hsu serves in various leadership roles in his local area surrounding Fort Walton Beach. Organizations include Sustainable Emerald Coast, Enterprise Florida, Okaloosa County Military Affairs Committee, Northwest Florida State College Foundation, Economic Development Council of Okaloosa, University of West Florida Foundation, Emerald Coast Science Center, and the Eglin Chapter AFA Education Foundation.[24]
Over the last decade, Dr. Paul and Maggie Hsu have contributed annually to two Eglin Chapter AFA Aero Educational Foundation scholarships in the amounts of $5,000 each for JROTC students in pursuit of engineering and STEM focused degrees as named, Paul and Maggie Hsu Scholarship and the General Bill Kirk Scholarship.[25]
In February 2006, Hsu was selected by General T. Michael Moseley to join the USAF Chief of Staff Civic Leaders Advisory Group to help forge and strengthen the critical bonds between the Air Force and the community it serves.[26]
In 2015, Hsu founded the Hsu Educational Foundation Inc. to establish a public charitable 501c3 to accomplish a mission for encouraging excellence in teaching and inspiring innovation in the classroom. Developing key public and private partnerships, the foundation has established a HSU Innovation Institute South in Fort Walton Beach, FL, a HSU Innovation Institute North in Crestview, FL as well as a HSU STEM Range, 400 acre rural property in Laurel Hill, FL used for research, testing and training.[27] Programs of the HSU Educational Foundation include a wide scope of outreach and training in areas of science, technology, engineering and math fields. Partnering with local industry and military, FieldWerx was developed to empower both members of the community, professionals, students, and airmen through skills development, prototyping new solutions, shared technical resources and the use of makerspace facilities to drive innovation outside the gates of Hurlburt Field and Eglin Air Force Base[27]. The latest program of expanded development includes the HSU UAS Center of Excellence, supporting R&D, Testing and Evaluation and Training in Unmanned Aircraft Systems[27]. The HSU Educational Foundation was selected in July 2021 to serve as a TRUST (The Recreational UAS Safety Test) administrator on behalf of the FAA.[28]
The foundation and its board of directors have created outreach programs of science and engineering by flexing technical skill sets to solve real world challenges[27]. These programs range from cybersecurity, robotics, drones, environment, and energy, as well as exploring many other up-and-coming technical fields[27]. In June 2021, the opening of the Northwest Florida State College Aviation Center of Excellence at HSU Innovation Institute North marked a new milestone in aviation workforce training for the foundation in meeting a goal to bring FAA certified Airframe and Powerplant Mechanics training to Bob Sikes Airport in Okaloosa County.[29]
