Paul Rothbart[1] (born Paul Lawrence Rothbart Jr.; June 19, 1961) is an American stand-up comedian, actor, screenwriter and independent film director.
Early Life
Rothbart was born Paul Lawrence Rothbart Jr in Brooklyn, NY, the oldest child of Audrey (born Elmendorf; December 1, 1934), a school aide, and Paul Rothbart Sr. (June 3, 1935 - September 3, 2011), a transfer clerk on Wall St. Both of his parents were also born in Brooklyn, his father half-German, half Irish Catholic, and his mother Dutch, Swedish, German Lutheran. Rothbart has a younger brother, Robert, who was born in 1963, and a younger sister, Rita, who was born in 1965.
Although his family moved several times, for most of his early childhood he lived in a four-story walkup in Flatbush at 2406 Newkirk Ave. He was very close to his mother and siblings, but had a difficult and complex relationship with his father, whom he nevertheless credits for his sense of humor and love of films. He attended PS 269 and Shellbank JHS in Sheepshead Bay. Rothbart participated in a special program in junior high school, which allowed him to skip seventh grade.
Rothbart spent his childhood playing sports and going to the movies. He also enjoyed watching stand-up comics on television. In fifth grade, Rothbart won a creative writing award with a short story about a school cafeteria clock that was depressed and suicidal. It was passed around to the entire faculty, many of whom commented on how much it reminded them of Woody Allen's prose. Rothbart, 10 years old at the time, was thrilled by the comparison and became a lifelong fan of Allen's.
In 1974, with Flatbush becoming a more and more dangerous neighborhood, Rothbart's family moved to New Milford, CT. The 13-year-old Rothbart felt like a fish out of water in the small, New England town. He was very introverted and socially awkward in high school, which formed the basis for his self-deprecating style of humor. He attended New Milford High School, graduating in 1978.
After graduating high school, Rothbart attended the University of Cincinnati for a year as a civil engineering major. He left college due to realizing he had no interest in engineering and not liking living in the Midwest.
