PAUL SELWYN

Paul Selwyn was born in Antwerp, Belgium in March 1933. With his parents, he immigrated to America, and arrived in Beverly Hills, California in October 1938. Five years later, he became a United States citizen.

Paul was an important member of the Beverly Hills High School Tennis team that won the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) state championship in 1951.

While attending UCLA he was on the Tennis and Cricket Teams, and joined the NROTC program. Paul graduated from UCLA in 1955, with a Bachelor’s Degree, and was commissioned an Ensign in the US Navy.

He served as the Disbursing Officer in Subic Bay, Philippines in 1956–57, and then took a job with Herald International in Hong Kong.

Returning to Beverly Hills from Hong Kong in late 1958, he became Vice-President of Pauling and Company, importing Diamonds and Gem Stones, and manufacturing Fine Jewelry.

Shortly after returning to BH, in February, he met Joan Gordon on a blind date, and soon they were married in May 1959. They have two children, Marc Selwyn and Laura Selwyn Wyatt, and celebrated 60 years of marriage in 2019.

In 1968 he became the owner and President of Pauling and Company, until his retirement in 1990.

In 1979 Paul was one of the Founding Board Members of the Los Angeles Children’s Museum, and later served as President and then Chairman.

From 1980 until 1986 he served on the Beverly Hills Architectural Commission. In 1986 he was appointed to the Beverly Hills Planning Commission where he served until 1994. He chaired both Commissions twice during his terms.

Paul was a member of the Beverly Hills Tennis Club for 30 years and served as President in 1992–93.

He served as President of the Santa Barbara Children’s Museum (now known as MOCX) from 2000–2009, and he was a Trustee of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art from 2003 to 2006.

In 1994 Paul started, and became President of the Beverly Hills Cultural Center Foundation. This organization later became the “Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts”, and Paul served on that Board of Directors until 2014. He holds the title of Founding President.[1]

In 2012 he originated “F3”, First Friday Forum lunch group. There are over 90 professional men, community leaders and retired businessmen that meet each month to hear an outstanding speaker provided by one of the members.

Paul’s interests include: photography, automobiles, skiing, tennis and golf.
