Pauline Mont Sherman (August 27, 1921 – August 17, 2007) was an American aerospace engineer and Professor of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Michigan from 1960 to 1987. She was an expert in hypersonic flow and was the first woman appointed to the engineering faculty at the University of Michigan..[1]

Early life and education[edit]

Pauline M. Sherman was born New York City to Polish immigrants, and was raised in the New York City metro area.[2] In 1952, she received a B.S.E. degree in engineering mechanics from the University of Michigan where she participated in research on aircraft icing.[1] In 1953, she earned an M.S.E. degree in mechanical engineering at the University of California, Berkeley, where she also worked as a research engineer.[2]

Academic career[edit]

Sherman returned to the University of Michigan in 1956 as an associate research engineer.[1] She was promoted to the position of Assistant Professor of Aerospace Engineering in 1960, becoming the first woman appointed to the engineering faculty, and received subsequent promotions to Associate Professor in 1963 and to full Professor in 1971. Sherman's research interests included jet noise, low-density flows, two-phase flow, formation of particulates, condensation, and hypersonic flows.[2] In the early 1960s, she supervised the design and construction of a hotshot wind tunnel that was used to study re-entry for space vehicles[3]

Outside of her position at the University of Michigan, Sherman lectured on hypersonic testing facilities as a part of a NATO-AGARD lecture tour, served as a consultant for the EPA and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and served as an advocate for women in science.[1] After her retirement in 1987, she volunteered for the American Civil Liberties Union.[2]

Legacy[edit]

The Pauline M. Sherman Collegiate Professorship at the University of Michigan is named in her honor, and is currently held by Joaquim R. R. A. Martins.[2]
