Education
Paulo Barrozo earned his LL.B. at Rio de Janeiro State University and his Master of Jurisprudence at Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro[1]. Upon graduating, he then received his Ph.D. in Political Science at Rio de Janeiro University Research Institute (now the Institute of Social and Political Studies, Rio de Janeiro State University)[2]. After moving to the United States, Barrozo attended Harvard University, where he received his Doctor of Juridical Science (S.J.D)[1].
Throughout his graduate studies in Brazil and the United States, Barrozo explored several topics and interests in the realm of law and legal theory, including rights, punishment, cruelty, structural mercy, legal education, distribution, institutionalization, the nature of the political realm, the nature and evolution of law, and the history of legal and political thought[3]. He also completed pro-bono work, with a particular interest in child law and advocacy[2].
Academic Career
Barrozo remained at Harvard as a Lecturer in Social Thought until 2009. In 2008, he became the inaugural recipient of Harvard University’s Stanley Hoffmann Prize for Excellence in Teaching.[4]. The award serves to recognize faculty, fellows, or lecturers who show unparalleled ingenuity and commitment to their discipline within a classroom setting[4]
Following Harvard, Barrozo joined the faculty of Boston College Law School, where he has taught Philosophy of Law, Constitutional Theory, Criminal Law, Global Risks and Regulations, The Past and Future of the Nation State, Family Law, and International Law[3]. He is a Professor and the John C. Ford Distinguished Scholar at the School, where he currently serves as the Associate Dean of Faculty and Global Programs.[3]
Publications
Barrozo’s scholarship covers a broad range of topics, with special focuses including theories of punishment, legal evolution, constitutional theory, legal theory, distribution in jurisprudence, transitional justice, and the dynamic between the law and political institutions in America. His articles have been published by Yale’s Journal of Law & the Humanities[5], Law & Contemporary Problems[6], Criminal Law and Philosophy[7], Direito & Praxis, and Archiv für Rechts- und Sozialphilosophie.
Among his publications is “Law in Time: Legal Theory and Legal History[5],” which was published by Yale University’s Journal of Law & the Humanities. In this piece, Barrozo touches on how social stability is sustained across simple and complex societies through normative inertia or constant change. In “Capitalism & Jurisprudence[8],” he argues that legal critique of capitalism must move past early phases of enchantment and disenchantment into true theoretical maturity.
