Paulo Nabhan (25 January 1923 – 14 March 1990) was a Brazilian politician of Lebanese descent who served four non-consecutive terms as Mayor of Corguinho, in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, between 1956 and 1989.[1]
Early life
Nabhan was born in Ponta Porã, Mato Grosso, to Neif Jorge Nabhan and Angelina Martins. He moved during his youth to the region of Rochedo and later to Corguinho, where he established himself as a farmer and truck driver. In 1947, he married Maria Abadia Ribeiro, with whom he had six children.[1]
Political career
Nabhan began his public life shortly after the emancipation of Corguinho in 1953, serving as a member of the municipal council. He was first elected mayor in 1955, taking office in January 1956 as a member of the Social Democratic Party (PSD).[2]
Mayor of Corguinho
Nabhan served four terms as mayor:
- 31 January 1956 – 31 January 1960 (PSD)
- 31 January 1964 – 31 January 1969 (ARENA)
- 31 January 1973 – 31 January 1977 (ARENA)
- 31 January 1983 – 31 January 1989 (PMDB)
During his administrations, he oversaw the construction of the municipality’s first public school, the bridge over the Formiga Stream, and the local sports gymnasium (later renamed Ginásio Paulo Nabhan). He also expanded rural electrification, reaching approximately 40% of local properties by the end of his third term.[3]
Nabhan also faced the severe drought of 1967–1968, personally coordinating water distribution using tanker trucks. He founded the annual Corn Festival (Festa do Milho), which became a cultural tradition in the municipality.[4]
Legacy
After his death, the Municipal Council of Corguinho approved legislation naming the city’s main avenue Avenida Paulo Nabhan. The sports gymnasium and a state school in the district of Taboco were also named in his honor.[5]
Death
Nabhan died in Campo Grande on 14 March 1990 due to cardiac complications. His funeral was held at the Municipal Council of Corguinho and attended by several state authorities.[6]
