Peder Holk Nielsen (born 24 August 1956.[1]) is a Danish businessman, currently President and CEO of Novozymes. He took over the position on April 1st 2013 from Steen Riisgaard.[2] Nielsen is known for being outspoken on the opportunities associated with biology from a sustainability perspective; in 2016, Forbes named him a Global Game Changer,[3] while Business Insider named him one of the world’s top “Creators”.[4]

In Denmark, Peder Holk Nielsen is also known for his commitment to secure production jobs in the country[5] and he is a part of the Government's so-called production panel.[6]

Peder Holk Nielsen argues that the 21st century will be the age of biology, as opposed to the previous century dominated by physics and chemistry[7][8] and that sustainability will be a driving force for business.[9][10]

Education[edit]

Peder Holk Nielsen graduated in Chemical Engineering from the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) in 1981, from which he also obtained a PhD in 1984.[11] He also holds a degree in International Business Management from Copenhagen Business School[1][11].

Career[edit]

Peder Holk Nielsen began his career in the field of industrial biotechnology in 1984 as a Marketing Manager in the Enzymes Division of Novo A/S[1].

In 1987, he became Head of the New Business Development Group. He took over as Vice President in R&D in 1990. In 1995 Peder Holk Nielsen became part of the management group for the enzyme business in Novo Nordisk, initially as Corporate Vice President of Development and Quality management, and from 1999 in charge of Sales and Marketing in the enzymes business.[12] He held this position until the demerger of Novozymes from Novo Nordisk in 2000[1].

Since 2007, Nielsen has been the head of the enzymes business in Novozymes, including production, procurement, development and quality management. In April 2013, he became the President and CEO of the company, taking over from the 12 year tenure of Steen Riisgaard[2].

Other roles[edit]

Nielsen serves on the Board of Directors of Hempel A/S and of LEO Pharma A/S[1].[13]

He is a co-chair for the B20 Summits – Task Force on Climate, Energy and Resource Efficiency, the business-arm of the G20.[14][15]

Peder Holk Nielsen is an advocate of industry modernizing and growth as a Member of the Danish government’s Digitization Council[16][17] and an Advisor to the Foreign Economic Forum under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Denmark).[18] Internationally, he is a Member of the International Chamber of Commerce[19] as part of the Chamber's G20 CEO Advisory Group.[20] He takes a strong stance pro-sustainability, calling the use of enzymes in day to day processes a good way to "save so much water, and so much energy".[21]
