Pedro Wosgrau Filho (19 September 1947 – 13 July 2021) was a Brazilian politician and engineer.[1] A member of the Brazilian Social Democracy Party, he served as mayor of Ponta Grossa from 1989 to 1993 and again from 2005 to 2013.

Biography[edit]

Filho earned a degree in civil engineering from the Federal University of Paraná. He dedicated his first term in office to modernization of Ponta Grossa. The city bought the old train station which existed in the city, and, following its demolition, held the inaugural Festa Nacional do Chope Escuro [pt]. Although the German population in Ponta Grossa was relatively small, it was significant enough to revitalize the culture, including beer provided by Cervejaria Adriática [pt].

In 1989, Filho and his Deputy Mayor, Paulo Cunha do Nascimento, supported the election of President Fernando Collor de Mello. In 1990, they supported the campaign of José Carlos Martinez Correia for Governor of Paraná, although Correia was unsuccessful.

In 1992, following the Impeachment of Fernando Collor [pt], Filho declined to run for re-election as mayor of Ponta Grossa and supported his deputy mayor to take the office. He retired from politics until 2004, when he once again decided to run for mayor. He defeated the incumbent Péricles de Mello [pt] of the Workers' Party with 51.78% of the votes. In 2008, he enjoyed a high approval rating and defeated Cidadania candidate Sandro Alex [pt] with 52% of the vote in the second round.[2]

Pedro Wosgrau Filho died of COVID-19 in Ponta Grossa on 13 July 2021 at the age of 73.[3]
