Pendulum (Card Game)

Overview and setup: This card game can be played between three or more players, with one dealer. The basic setup of the game requires three cards being dealt to each player facedown. Each player is able to view their own cards at this point in the game. One card (the dealers’ card) is placed face-down in the centre of the table. This is revealed by the dealer to all players at the end of the round.

Playing the game: The dealers’ card decides the fate of the round. If the dealers card is black then lower order cards become the most valuable for a player, but if the card is red then higher order cards are the most valuable. During each round each player will choose one card of the three cards in their hand and place this card facedown in front of them on the table. Although the dealers’ card is not revealed until the end of the round, the aim of the game is to choose from your hand a card that has the best potential of winning you the round. Each player will then place one card from their hand in front of them on the table. Typically either their highest or lowest order card. The dealer then reveals the dealers’ card and ranks each player based on the order of the cards presented. Concluding the round. At the end of the round each player will add an extra card to their hand in order to replenish their hand for the next round.

The order of the cards: Highest to lowest

King, Queen, Jack, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, Ace

Hearts > Diamonds > Spades > Clubs

Example: Three cards are dealt to each player and one is dealt to the dealer. Each player will place their chosen card in front of them before the dealer reveals the dealers’ card.

In this game the dealers card is red, therefore the highest card provided by a player will win and the lowest card will lose.

In the second game (cards replenished), a black card has been revealed by the dealer. This results in the lowest card on the table winning the round and the highest card losing the round.

If by chance the dealers card is red and also the highest card, then the dealer will win the hand. The dealer would also win if the dealers card was black and also the lowest card revealed on the table.

Spin-offs: Betting: Players are able to bet on their card and the potential that they will win. Games can begin with either a standardised win/ lose value for each round or players can place individual bets on the outcome of each round.

The origin of the game: This game was invented in Cambodia by Joel V (2017) and was subsequently spread. The game has been adapted as a drinking game, with the winner of each round having the luxury of choosing one person from the table to drink one shot of spirits, while the loser of each round is automatically given a shot of spirits. It is considered poor-sport to continually choose a mid-tier card from your hand to play (6 7 8 9 10) and any player found to be intentionally doing this will be awarded two shots of spirits to compensate.
