The Pennsylvania Chapter of A Continuous Charity (PA ACC) provides interest-free loans to Muslims across the state that are in financial need.[1] Founded in 2019, the Pennsylvania chapter is the ninth incorporated state chapter in the organization.

A Continuous Charity (ACC) is a 501(c)(3) organization funded entirely by private donations on the grassroots level.[1][2] PA ACC connects with different mosques, universities, and other organizations to raise funds and reach out to students. Members of the organization deliver presentations, create flyers, and contact community members across different regions in Pennsylvania. Over $383,000 in interest-free loans have been granted since July 1, 2019[3]. Furthermore, ACC has been active in advocating for a more affordable education.[4]

Mission Statement[edit]

PA ACC aims to promote the Islamic and intellectual development of Muslims by providing interest-free loans for higher education[1]. This is done in the hope of bringing about a generation of graduates that will have a strong Muslim identity and be well-versed in their fields, using both for the benefit of mankind. PA ACC offers loans of up to $27,500 to students pursuing higher education on both undergraduate and graduate levels. The requirements for borrowers include that they are Muslim, serve the Muslim community, and live in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Credit-worthy co-signers who live in Pennsylvania are required to guarantee repayment for all loans.

PA ACC lends money for student tuition or refinancing of previous student tuition-related debt.

PA ACC prioritizes, but does not only give consideration to, the following underserved groups:

PA ACC has the following programs that it offers for potential donors to contribute towards:

  • Family initiated Legacy funds
  • Non-profit initiated Legacy funds
  • PA ACC Endowment
  • One time or recurring PA ACC General Fund

History[edit]

PA ACC is based on the Quranic injunction "O you who have believed, fear Allah and give up what remains [due to you] of interest, if you should be believers. And if you do not, then be informed of a war [against you] from Allah and His Messenger. But if you repent, you may have your principal - [thus] you do no wrong, nor are you wronged." (Al-Baqarah 278:279)[5]

Muslim communities throughout recorded history have included these type of interest-free (riba-free) loans as one of the pillars of a vibrant society [6].

The Pennsylvania Chapter of A Continuous Charity was founded in the summer of 2019 in the home of a Philadelphia Suburban Muslim Family. The co-founding members, Dr. Heidar Jasim Albandar and Usman Baqai have served as the President and Vice-President, respectively, since the beginning of the formation of the Pennsylvania chapter.[7]
