Penny Hundleby

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Penny Hundleby is a senior plant scientist, specialising in brassica transformation[1] and is currently based at the John Innes Centre, Norwich.

Penny was involved in establishing the Biotechnology Resources for Arable Crop Transformation, one of the UK's first crop transformation facilities for both UK and International researchers[2]. The facility offers transformation and targeted gene knockout resources, using CRISPR/Cas9 technology for a range of crops such as *Brassica oleracea*, *Brassica napus*, wheat, barley, *Medicago*, potato, tobacco and tomato.

In 1997, Penny, together with Judith Irwin, was part of a team who produced the first and only genetically modified plants to be exhibited at the Chelsea Flower Show, with the display ‘[Gregor] Mendel’s Garden, Past, Present and Future’ winning a silver science medal.

Penny is actively involved in Public Engagement and Outreach in the area of Genetically Modified Crops, focusing on the regulatory and political climate of biotech crops and GM food in Europe, as well as on a global level.[3]

Penny was part of the group that led the work package on Risk Assessment, Biosafety and Public Engagement for the EU Pharma Planta programme that ran 2005–2011 (refs). The aim of which was to develop an approved production pipeline for pharmaceutical proteins made in plants and take a candidate product all the way through development culminating in (the first) phase I human clinical trial.

Penny is a trustee and one of the founding members of the International Society on Plant Molecular Farming.[4]
