PENPALS(ペンパルズ) (stylized PENPALS) is a Japanese rock band formed in 1996. The band was founded by twin brothers Seiya and Kinya Kamijou, both students at the time.[1][2]

The band is known for their 1997 debut single Tell me why, which was used as the opening theme for the 1997 anime Berserk.[3]

History[edit]

The band was formed in August 1996 by brothers Seiya and Kinya Kamijou. Yosihito Hirai, formerly part of Young Punch joined the brothers, along with Hayashi Munemasa and Yosihito Hirai. They released their debut self-titled album, on July 20, 1997, through VAP. On November 6, 1997, they released their most notable single, tell me why, which was used as the opening theme for the 1997 anime Berserk.[4]

In March 2000, Young Punch and Penpals released a joint album, "Young Punch/Penpals", and in April–May went on tour together.[5]

The band released 7 albums between 1997 and 2004, along with 2 compilations and an E.P.[6]

In 2005, the band split, with Hayashi forming the band Reverslow.

The band reformed in 2012, releasing their eight album Past Rest Summer on July 25. The album featured a new recording of Tell me why.
