The feature set of Penpot focuses on user interface and user experience design, with an emphasis on real-time collaboration, utilizing a variety of vector graphics editor and prototyping tools. Penpot enables website wireframing and creating click-through prototypes.
Features[edit]
Real-time collaboration[edit]
Users can work with others in real-time on the same design, leave comments, and share designs with teams.
Components[edit]
Users can create components to create logos, buttons, and other assets for reuse.
Prototype and animation[edit]
Users can create animated prototypes through linking boards, and add interactions, transitions, and flows. These prototypes can be previewed on supported mobile devices.
Flex Layout[edit]
Penpot incorporates Flex Layout, which mirrors the CSS flexbox model.[1] The feature was launched at FOSDEM 2023.[2]
Fonts management[edit]
Users can upload and use custom font files. The program also comes with Google Fonts.
Dev Inspect Tools[edit]
Users can inspect their designs with a code inspector, measurement tools, and properties inspector. Penpot provides the CSS rules for designs, as well as the source SVG code of any component that the user selects.[1]
Self-hosting and SaaS[edit]
Users can choose whether to use Penpot on the cloud or opt for self-hosting within a container.[3]
History[edit]
Penpot was founded by Kaleidos, a company focused on IT experiments and collaborations with startups and corporations. It emerged from the need to address the limitations faced by designers within the open source ecosystem. Kaleidos, originally developer-centric, recognized the value of multi-functional teams and created Taiga, an agile project management platform. However, designers expressed frustration with existing open source design tools and proposed using the proprietary tool Figma. To maintain their commitment to open source, Kaleidos developed Penpot as a comparable open source alternative to Figma.[4]
$8M Funding by Decibel[edit]
In the wake of Adobe's acquisition of Figma for $20 billion in 2022, Penpot’s userbase grew 5,600% to 100,000 users in the span of a couple of weeks.[5]
In 2023, Penpot raised $12 million in equity funding.[5] Decibel led the round, with existing investor Athos Capital and a number of angels participating, including Google Fonts leader Dave Crossland, VSCO president and former Figma COO Eric Wittman, and Cisco’s VP of Developer Relations Strategy and Experience Grace Francisco.[6] The funding will support the development of new tools and features, both for cloud-based and self-hosted environments.[7] Penpot remains free to use.[6][5][7]
Penpot Fest[edit]
In June 2023, Penpot hosted its titular Penpot Fest in Barcelona, Spain. The two-day conference featured keynotes, workshops, and other events by designers, developers, and scholars at GitHub, Open Source Community Africa, Token Studio, Red Hat, Rochester Institute of Technology, Inkscape, Nextcloud, Xata, Blender, Gitlab, Godot, and Smashing Magazine.[8]
