Pentik
Established in 1971 by Anu Pentik (officially Pentikäinen, born Pasi) and Topi Pentikäinen, Pentik Oy is a family business in ceramic industry and home decor. Its story started after the Pentikäinens had moved to Posio where Anu worked on ceramics and leather in the cellar of the house they had rented. In 1973, they built pottery, store and café, which all became important tourist attractions for Posio. The first store in Helsinki was opened on Esplanadi in 1976.[1]
During the years of growth in the 1980s, Pentik Oy also produced leather clothes, but in the 1990s the focus shifted on making and selling ceramics. Located right next to the Polar Circle, Pentik’s ceramic factory is the northernmost in the world and the only one in Finland. Employing 35 people, the factory manufactures 300.000 ceramic objects per year. Pentik also has an own candle factory in Posio.[2]
The product range of Pentik Oy includes interior and kitchen textiles, as well as products made of other materials such as tree, glass and metal. The designers of Pentik Oy draw their subjects largely from the Northern nature. Permanent basic collection is complemented four times a year with changing seasonal collections full of products for interior decoration and table setting. The chain of Pentik stores selling interior products, table settings products and gifts was established in 1992. Today (2019) Pentik is an international home décor store chain with approximately 70 stores in Finland and some in Sweden, Czech and Russia. In Finland, Pentik products are also sold in Sokos and Stockmann department stores.[3]
Pentik employs approximately 250 people, and its turnover is EUR 29 million (2017). In 2004, Anu’s and Topi’s son Pasi Pentikäinen became the CEO of Pentik while Topi Pentikäinen was nominated as the Chairman of the Board. Anu Pentik is responsible for design with Pentik’s in-house designers Lasse Kovanen, Minna Niskakangas and Liina Harju who design products both for basic and seasonal collections. Ceramic series Kallio, Kivi, Valo, Ilo, Vanilja and Posio are designed by Anu Pentik. Lasse Kovanen is an Industrial Designer and Master of Arts (MA) who designs his patterns inspired by nature, plants and animals. Liina Harju is a Bachelor of Arts (BA) from Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture, from Textile Art program. Minna Niskakangas is an Industrial Designer and Master of Arts from Lappi University.[4]
In 2009, Suomen Kuvalehti chose Pentik as the best family business in Finland.[5]
