Per Anthony Laland
(born May 8th, 1954, in Oslo, Norway, with a Norwegian father and a British mother), Norwegian artist. Trained as an elementary school teacher in Norway and the UK and attended the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences.
He has been working full-time as a drawer since 1983. Per Laland works exclusively with a pencil, basically in black, grey, and white nuances, in recent times also increasingly with elements of colour. He finds his motifs in objects close to him – a shoe, a hand, a vase, a self-portrait. Another series of motifs stems from the Skillebekk quarter in Oslo, where he lives. His scrutinizing documentation of old townhouses, plazas and streets is of great value to the identity of the neighbourhood.
Laland’s drawings are strictly figurative and meticulously detailed, characterized by sharp realism. However, his use of indirect light, marked shadows and colouring adds a romantic element to his drawings, most visible in the depictions of his preferred motifs – older buildings.
Per Laland has exhibited at the Galleri H 11 in Bærum and in Gallery Albin Upp in Oslo.
