Period Properties 1
Glansevern Hall is an estate near Berriew, Powys. It comprises about 105 acres, mostly farmland and fishing on the Rhiw and Severn.
History
The Owen family is one of the most powerful – and most ancient – families in Wales. The Owens trace their history to at least 1165, when the illegitimate daughter of Lord Rhys of Deheubarh married Cadifor ap Dinawal, Lord of Castell Hywell. In 1801 Sir Arthur Davies Owen called on architect Joseph Bromfield to create an ornate mansion house for him on the banks of the River Severn. Bromfield created a stunning mansion, one of the best examples of Greek revival style. The house still retains its 18th century Chinese wallpaper. The interiors boast medieval panelling brought from nearby churches at Llangurig and Montgomery.
Glansevern Hall
Glansevern Hall is a two-storey, 5 bay Grade II* listed Welsh country house.[1] The house was built for Arthur Davies Owen, and designed by Joseph Bromfield, architect, of Shrewsbury, c1800, who prepared various plans for the house before the present Greek Revival design was adopted. Various changes were made later, including the addition of a porch (though based on earlier designs), and a service wing in 1849 which was subsequently demolished.[1]
Current use
Glansevern Hall is currently the home of the Thomas family. The Thomas family keep the gardens open to the public and rent out the outbuildings within the grounds of the Glansevern Estate.[2]
