Pershing Barracks is a cadet housing facility at the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York. Built between 1891 and 1895 as the West Academic Building, it was converted to barracks and renamed in 1959 to honor John J. Pershing. The building underwent major renovations between 2018 and 2020 as part of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Cadet Barracks Upgrade Program.[1][2][3][4]
History
The building was originally constructed as the West Academic Building between 1891 and 1895 and later converted to barracks in 1959, when it was renamed Pershing Barracks to honor John J. Pershing.[5][6]
Architecture
The building incorporates Gothic, Tudor, and Romanesque design influences consistent with late-19th-century West Point construction.[7] The building was designed by architect Richard Morris Hunt and constructed between 1891 and 1895 as the West Academic Building.[8]
Renovations
Pershing Barracks underwent a major modernization from 2018 to 2020 under the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Cadet Barracks Upgrade Program, including building systems, interiors, and energy performance improvements.[9][10]
Current use
The barracks houses cadets from the Third Regiment and Cadet Regimental Staff.[11]
